Dota 2
Is the community as bad as I hear?
I've always thought MOBA's looked fun, but I've never taken the time to learn. I've started learning DOTA 2 a little with the tutorials and bots, but I hear this game's community is nothing but jerks who will jump on me for every tiny mistake even in casual matches. If so, I'm not sure I ever want to bother. Is this true or an exaggeration? Are there many people here who play this to just have some fun and be nice? Maybe even helpful if a new player doesn't understand everything about a game with 8 billion things to learn? Should I bother?

Yes. The community in Dota 2 have been positively taking the reward of being THE worst on the Internet for years on end now.

"Cancer" would be one word to describe them.

If you're gonna play solo queue, 90% of the time, you're not gonna have a good time due to players not cooperating with one another.
I suggest picking up 4 other friends and queue together.

Not everyone is a total prick who hates people for random and little things, but there are a lot of them in this community, and they tend not to be quiet, so that's what most people see.

Sometimes you get nice people.
Sometimes.
OH WHO AM I KIDDING SAVE YOURSELF FROM THIS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
People who complain about dota2's community never played HoN.

The bottom line is, if you don't know how to play, watch someone else or play against bot AI's to learn.

Games can take upwards around and hour, and without the ability to concede (surrender) and end a game early, having a newb on the team means spending the next hour of your life unable to win, and immensely frustrated.

For this reason, the community is bitter towards newbs. They are loss-makers, and time-wasters, and we hate them very much. Do your homework, and then you can come to play.

Edit: So to all the people who say "Dota 2 is cancerous! Why do they yell at me?!" It's probably because you're terrible, and we got stuck matched up with you, doomed to spend the next hour hating you very very much.

As much as they say its a bad community.

Its really about the game modes. SD and RD along with Least played are usually filled with more realxed players.(Probabaly better as well)

Meh, they don't bother me.. it's a game, you enjoy it as much as you can manage yourself.. ofcourse if you take things to heart, believe that having a 10 minute conversation (flame war) with 12 old is a good idea during a match, or take note of every little insult a stranger might throw at you, then perhaps this game is not a good choice..

The only logicall reason anyone has to rage at anyone else is if you're abysmally unskilled. If Matchmaking could be fixed. Raging would only come from trolls.

Alas, Valve's "valve" is turned off for new and "smart" ideas.

yes, but its not everyone, just a bunch of immature jerks. I don't have a percentage, but if your playing solo you will run into players like this a lot. If the team is doing really well they won't complain too much aside from beratting the supports and complainig you aren't doing exactly what they want.

Than there are the dudes that will complain after one little setback and throw the game/rage

There is always an idiot who calls everyone a noob. The fact that you're assuming these flamers are right most of the time makes me doubt you have ever played Dota 2. I mean look at this ♥♥♥♥:

Dota 2 is cancerous. Doesn't matter how good you play it or how bad you play it, you are going to get flamed either by a guy who actually knows the game or someone who is new to the game.

Well, lol, I guess I have my answer. It sounds like a big part of the problem is the matchmaking, as I've heard in this thread and others. I can somewhat understand it being frustrating if the matchmaking is putting brand new players in with long time, skilled players, and yet.. from the stuff I hear, it still seems completely ridiculous to act the way I hear people act in this game. Didn't games used to be about fun at some point in time? When I was younger, we "raged" in a good natured way, gave each other crap because it's funny, not literally trying to convince the guy who sucks to actually go kill himself(which I've seen said more than once just in these forums alone). That's beyond pathetic.

It sounds like you need to blame Valve instead of the players who suck because they're trying to learn a new and difficult game. And if you get as hateful as you sound getting stuck with a bad player, that's a bit sad.

I think I'll go try Smite instead. I like the third person skill-based part. Anyone know if it's any better community wise?
