With the second car-free day taking place on Sunday in Dwarka, the capital saw a reduction in pollution levels due to a combination of factors according to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). “This initiative by the Delhi government has helped to prove once again that if the number of vehicles are controlled, pollution levels can be lowered significantly. This public awareness campaign must spur car-restraint measures to control pollution during winter…,” said Anumita Roy Chowdhury, CSE executive director.

According to CSE, there was “a dramatic difference between particulate pollution on the 4 km car-free stretch in Dwarka (sectors 3-13 and sectors 7-9) on Sunday and the heavy traffic stretch between Dhaula Kuan and Patel Chowk after the event.

The organisation carried out real-time exposure monitoring on both stretches. As per CSE data, during the car-free event, PM 2.5 level was recorded at 335 microgram per cubic metre (cum) in Dwarka — much lower than 645 microgram per cum recorded between Dhaula Kuan and Patel Chowk.

In their observations based on the ambient monitoring done by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the CSE said “significant reduction in overall ambient pollution level” was seen. PM 2.5 levels had seen a 21 per cent drop on Sunday.

As opposed to the city wide-ambient average of PM2.5 levels of 226 microgram per cum on Saturday, the figure stood at 177 microgram per cum on Sunday. Elaborating on this trend, the CSE said, “As November 22 was a Sunday, there was a significant reduction in overall traffic volume in the city…”
