New Delhi: After posters appeared on Saturday offering a hefty monetary reward to anyone who killed Kanhaiya Kumar, the Delhi Police has conveyed to the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration its concerns about the high threat perception to the student leader. The police requested the university to keep them apprised of Kumar’s movements and his activities in order to ensure watertight security.
In a letter to the university authorities, DCP (South) Prem Nath said that the station house officer of Vasant Kunj (north) police station, under whose jurisdiction the campus falls, should be informed well in time about “the movements/visits of Kumar outside the campus, including the nature of visits and travel mode so that necessary security/preventive measures may be taken to prevent any untoward incident”.

The letter was drafted after Kumar’s release from jail and after the south district cops had a meeting with the security unit about protecting the student who was detained on charges of sedition. Sources said that the move came in view of the Supreme Court’s directive to the police after the attack on Kumar at the Patiala House Courts complex on February 17 asking them to ensure that none of the students arrested for sedition should suffer even a scratch.
The police’s preparedness to meet any exigency was reflected in the meticulous manner in which Kumar’s release and travel from jail after being granted bail was handled.
Sources said that a police team will now accompany the JNUSU president every time he goes out of the campus. This security cover will be apart from that being provided round the clock by sleuths of the intelligence unit of Delhi Police. Sources said Kumar would still have to appear before the police and help them in their investigation whenever required. Also, having been charged with sedition, his movements are going to be monitored by intelligence agencies.

The Delhi Police’s special cell, which has been handed task of investigating the JNU case, is likely to ask Kumar to join the probe next week. The cops may also make more arrests. At present, the special cell is busy tracking down some participants belonging to Kashmir who have been on the run since the event on February 9.
The special cell may also ask some JNU professors to join the probe, sources said. The investigators believe that more than one professor lent support to the controversial event and also helped Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, two students who have now been arrested, avoid arrest before their surrender to the police.
