Summer events, fiscal management get commissioners’ attention

Tue, 08/05/2014 - 7:00pm

Lincoln County Commissioners met Tuesday morning to review an agenda that included landmark summertime events, while focusing overall on fiscal management.

Leading the fiscal discussion was the news that the bond refunding for Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset will achieve a reduction in interest payments of about $40,000 per year. The documents that will achieve the interest payment reduction were scheduled to be signed on Tuesday afternoon by representatives of Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties and the Jail Authority.

Lincoln County Treasurer Rick Newell also said that a payment in excess of $160,000 had been received from the Maine State Board of Corrections to augment jail operating expenses.

Lincoln County Recycling showed a fiscal improvement over the same period in 2013, marking a $17,218 increase in sales. County Administrator John O’Connell said that revenue had improved because both volume and prices were slightly higher than in 2013.

A visit by representatives of the Midcoast Economic Development District raised the possibility of further expense reduction by offering Lincoln County towns the opportunity to enter into a voluntary joint purchasing program. Commissioners expressed interest in pursuing further discussions with the representatives who cautioned that some purchasing efforts have a “significant geographic component” — like fuel oil and sand — so are now including smaller groups of municipalities.

Two major events in Lincoln County will take place over the next several days. Monhegan Island will mark its 400th anniversary on August 5 and 6. In addition to a parade on August 6, Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins and Rep. Chellie Pingree will speak. There will be live music followed by fireworks.

Over the weekend of August 8-9, the Wings Over Wiscasset Air Show will draw an estimated 10,000 visitors over two days. Additional arrangements have been made by the County EMA to provide emergency support for Monhegan Island during the anniversary event as well as for emergency response at the air show in the event that it becomes necessary.
