Westport Island selectmen discuss paving and flood maps

Tue, 08/05/2014 - 6:00pm

Westport Island selectmen met Monday evening to review an agenda that included the formation of road associations, and new information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Selectmen also discussed requests concerning Wright Landing, and accepted the resignation of Troy Hodgdon as chairman of the Wright Landing Committee.

Wright Landing was dedicated in June, 2010 after it was acquired by the town of Westport Island. The late Mary and Adrien Wright, previous owners, had given the town first right of refusal to purchase the land, which is used as a municipal boat launch and parking area.

Selectmen reviewed written information from the Maine Municipal Association in response to a question posed by a resident about forming a road association on the island. Maine Municipal Association advisors cited a Maine statute (Title 23) that provides definitions and clarification on the subject.

A letter and accompanying information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicated that there may be an increase in rates for those in areas that are subject to FEMA flood insurance, due to changes in the FEMA flood insurance maps. While towns were given 90 days to appeal the revisions, Westport Island will not submit an appeal to FEMA.

Chairman of the Board of Selectmen George Richardson indicated that the federal government may subsidize a portion of the increased amount. Individuals wishing more information about possible assistance can contact Sue Baker, National Flood Insurance Coordinator for the State of Maine at 207-287-8063.

The area around the town office will be paved by Gene Reynolds later this month. The area to be paved will cover a portion of Fowles Point Road, the town office parking lot and the three entrances to the building. The schedule remains tentative and will be reviewed at the next board of selectmen meeting. The town office may need to be closed for one day while the area is being paved. Closing dates (if needed) will be announced later this month.
