The traditional village of Kinopiastes in the Messi Region of Corfu is only 10km away from Corfu Town and the Airport.

Old mansions of the 17th to 19th centuries, a marble church, a 17th century monastery and a museum (and the only one on the island) devoted to the olive tree with some of the most famous restaurants on the island, are just some of the reasons you should visit this Village.

The main Church is devoted to the Virgin Mary and it is in the central square. It is a traditional church with unique architecture and an impressive marble entrance. Inside, there are frescoes of the 18th century Ionian School of Painting.

Kinopiastes has some of the purest water on the island which you may collect free from any of the many public "taps" in the village.   The water comes from the springs on the side of Ag.Deka.   The queues to collect water in summer can get quite long as many Corfiots come from town to fill up their plastic containers.

Music is a great tradition of the village and we have a very good philharmoniki (brass band), as well as a wonderful church choir.   In the height of summer there are often concerts held in the square and the panayiri on August 15th is great fun and absolutely crammed full of people eating, drinking and dancing.

I have been told by a young Corfiot friend of my daughter's that Spiros in Milia (at the bottom of the hill from Kinopiastes) is one of the best bouzouki places on the island.    They certainly have extremely good food, but I never understood how they kept going as it has always been very empty when we have eaten there at about 2100.   Now I understand, as the bouzouki crowd do not start to arrive until midnight!

I often while away the evening with a pareia in the plateia at the little taverna who serve really good food at incredibly cheap prices.

I will go to the Panayeri in Kinopiastes in August.

It's not far from Pelekas.

It's before my family arrive so i will pop over on the scooter for a beer!

Might see you there?

Sorry, Steve missed your reply.   Absolutely see you there.   It is a great evening I can promise you!   We shall be on one of the tables in the square outside the little taverna under the watchful eye of Rania.

Kinopiastes also has a shortcut, 1 km up the hill, to Agios Prokopios. It must be one of the most beuatiful walks in Corfu; starting from Taverna Tripas, through a passage covered with vine and past the pink convent, turning right going though olive and lemon groves steep up the hill and the view over Corfu is magnificent. Agios Prokopios is a sleepy. lovley, miniature village with pastel colored houses. Edgar Lear used to come here, and captured the view on some of his drawings.

Some interesting Kinopiastes history and facts, along with village life, can be found on the koinonkynopiaston blog:

The museum in the village is;

The Olive Museum
Located in the traditional village of Kinopiastes, 20 minutes drive south from Corfu Town. This recently opened museum, the best of its kind in Corfu, displays a well-maintained traditional olive press as well as authentic items of village life in Corfu.

This absolutely lovely film of an English family living in Kinopiastes during the early 70's was posted on the Kinopiastes Blog, showing village life, local village people, birds & the bees, seen from a young girl's perspective. The village is looking pretty much the same and the traditions remain thanks to a strong local community. You don't get much closer to paradise than this...
