Position Information

This supervisory position will serve as Program Director of Artisphere, Arlington's new 62,000 sq. ft. cultural center opened in October 2010. Artisphere offers a wide range of arts programs including visual arts, music, dance, news media and theater. The venue includes three theaters, a ballroom, three galleries,  a two-story video wall and wireless "town hall."

This position, which reports to the Artisphere Executive Director, will have overall responsibility for arts programming at Artisphere, planning a year-round calendar of over 120 performances, exhibits, and activities. The employee will negotiate contracts, develop and manage a $500,000 budget, and manage relationships with partner organizations. The employee will coordinate a staff of four, including an Arts Programmer, Visual Arts Curator, News Media Curator and Education Coordinator The work performed is extremely varied and subject to firm deadlines, requiring the ability to balance staffing, operational and budgetary concerns.

Specific duties include:

• Develop the vision for the programmatic direction of arts activities presented by Artisphere;
• Program approximately 120 events of all types annually;
• Identify, evaluate, and contract appropriate performing and visual arts content for presentation;
• Develop and implement systems and procedures for evaluating artistic submissions and scheduling performance spaces;
• Develop and manage budget for program components;
• Analyze ticket pricing scales and expected sales to assess income earning potential in relation to budget projections;
• Work with Executive Director and Communications/Marketing Director to position the center effectively for sponsorship and marketing initiatives;
• Train and supervise assigned staff;
• Represent the programming team in outreach to community organizations and audience members;
• Stay abreast of and continually assess current trends in arts programming and presenting;
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with a national network of arts presenters, programmers and organizations;
• Guide and work with programming team to ensure all programs create a cohesive complement, and
• Work collaboratively with all department heads to advance shows, ensure open communication and produce quality, smooth program operation.

The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years of experience in a managerial position of a public arts venue.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:  Bachelors degree in an art related field, and three years of progressively  responsible  work experience in a managerial position of a public arts venue that has included coordinating the work of others, and performing liaison and negotiating activities with a variety of groups representing multiple artistic disciplines.

 

Substitution: Experience above the minimum can be substituted on a year or year basis for the education requirement. A Master's Degree in Arts Administration, or related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

  

Desirable experience:

a) Developing year-round arts programming;

b) Programming for a broad spectrum of art disciplines;

c) Producing and/or managing arts and cultural facilities, events and/or projects;
d) Developing and managing budgets of at least $250,000;

e) Supervising staff involved in arts and cultural facilities;
f) Experience with box office operations, sales and reconciliations;
g) Establishing relationships with agents, art presenters as well as with Embassies and/or other art presenting organizations, and
h) Contract negotiations.

Additional Information

Artisphere hours of operations are: 4 p.m. – 11 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; Noon – 11 p.m.Saturday; and Noon – 5 p.m. Sunday. Hours may be extended to accommodate programming, particularly on weekends.

Work hours may fluctuate in response to scheduling needs.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave: Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance: Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.

Life Insurance: A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.

Retirement: The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement:  a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457).  The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County.  You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan.  General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan. 

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan.  The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit.  New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.


Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.


Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above.  They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. 

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments: 
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
