Purina Pro Plan Selects: Quality does make a difference

This is a sponsored review by BlogHer and Purina.

Every morning, some days even before the sun has fully risen, I take a walk down our dirt road with Max and Belle, my "puppies".

We have few neighbors, and virtually no traffic, situated as we are on 5 1/2 acres a mile from a highway, so no leashes are involved. Max and Belle are free to follow their noses into the woods, chasing rabbits or deer or their imaginations at times, but they never venture far, always returning within a few minutes.

When I stop to take photo after photo of a tiny flower beside the road, or a butterfly, or a beam of sunlight, they often just sit on their haunches, waiting patiently for me to stop clicking and continue walking.

Back at the house, I relax in my rocking chair on the back deck while they eat.

I love this quiet time in the morning, just the three of us. What a wonderful way to start a day!

Max, our German Shepherd/Great Dane (we think) mix, is actually a 7 year old. He's only mentally a puppy. A huge dog, he's physically approaching 'old man' status, suffering from arthritis which is exacerbated by elbow dysplasia, diagnosed when he was just a puppy; he has been on a special, prescription diet plus supplements ever since.

Belle, now just over a year old, is actually Max's puppy, not ours. When our old yellow Lab, Charly, died last year, we swore we weren't getting any more dogs. But Max was so lonely. It depressed us just to look at him, he was so despondent! Oh, those big brown, sad eyes!

What else could we do but re-consider the puppy question?

Belle, a Rottweiler mix, was a wanderer, as well, only she wandered up to a home four hours away from us. We found out about her through our college age daughter's network of friends. After taking a look at a photograph, and talking to the foster mom who couldn't afford to keep Belle herself because of the extensive menagerie she already cared for on a single income, we caved in and drove two hours to meet the woman and take Belle as our own.

We knew right away it was the right decision. Max loves her. She adores him.

I love happy stories.

And now we've celebrated her first birthday and the first anniversary of her homecoming. She's grown into a beautiful, energetic little tomboy, too old for puppy chow.

We've tried several types of adult dog food, but she hasn't been that keen on any of them. And it seems every one we've tried doesn't sit well on her tummy, either. To put it bluntly, she farts a lot!

So when BlogHer contacted me about being part of the Purina Pro Plan Selects review program, I jumped on the chance. It's a higher end dog food and I appreciated the chance to try it out for free, in case she didn't like it or she was still gassy.

I have to admit, my first impression with the food wasn't that great. Well, actually it just had to do with the packaging. Most of the food I've bought lately has a ziplock closure on the bag to keep it fresh (and keep insects out!); Pro Plan Selects doesn't. Or at least, the bag I received didn't.

Next, I had to find a magnifying glass so I could read the feeding instructions with my 52-year-old eyes. Tons of other marketing info cover the bag - a 33 pound bag - BIG! but the instructions are teeny tiny, way down at the very bottom on the back.

To read it, I either had to crouch down on the floor or lift the bag up on top of the washing machine. I decided to lift.

Mistake.

I had already opened the bag (silly me!), and while I reached for the magnifying glass, the bag tipped and spilled quite a bit of food on the ground ... behind the refrigerator ... under the wire shelves...
Thank goodness I heard it start to fall and righted it before it tipped all the way over.

Not a good start to my morning.

But now, after using the food for two weeks, those are the only complaints I can think of: no ziplock closure and feeding instructions in microscopic lettering.

And obviously ziplock closures don't equal quality food.

Because by day 2, we noticed Belle was more energetic than usual. Now, she was already a high energy dog (we suspect she's got at least a little bit of Jack Russell in her blood), but after just one day on Purina Pro Plan Selects, my husband and I both noticed a difference. She was practically flying down the road on our walks!

She still zonked out for her naps and slept soundly at night; I think she just felt better overall. And best of all, no more gas!

There are no artificial ingredients in Purina Pro Plan Selects and no corn, soy or other fillers. I can pronounce and even identify most of the ingredients. Beef is number one. Until now, I didn't realize what a difference that made in dog food. It will go a long way in convincing me to continue feeding it to Belle, despite the higher cost and inconvenience of having to purchase it in specialty pet stores.

Now I'll get to the fun part...

  2. Oh how wonderful to read about how you adopted Belle!

My dog Oscar is also adopted and came to us when he was 4.5 years old. My special moment is walking in the soft quiet of the early morning with him in the woods. It's heaven!

  3. Well, unfortunately my favorite times with Simon used to be playing Hide and Seek with him (yes, he'd find me every time), but now that he can no longer see, my favorite time is seeing him so excited when I come home, he jumps and cries and can't wait to be picked up. I also love listening to him when he's sleeping and when we're up at the lake he loves running around the gold course fairway near our condo after the course has closed for golfers, even though he can't see.

  5. Our dog, Kali, has a daily battle with the squirrel at the birdfeeder. Kali is certain that the squirrel is an agent of Satan. Despite Kali's barking, the squirrel eats away happily, oblivious.

  7. My husband works a night shift and when it comes to bedtime, the kids are sound asleep in their room and here I'm comforted with my dog and cat cuddling with me in our king sized bed.
I really look forward to this time each evening. They both sit in the same spot each night and keep me company until I fall asleep. Thanks so much.

  48. My husband and I have nine rescued dogs right now. Seven of them are at least eight years old and two of them are under a year old. My favorite part of any day is taking them outside in the yard to play. The two younger dogs get the older dogs running and playing again. This is our special time every day. I go out with them into the yard at least twice a day. I never leave them outside if I cannot see them. They have the biggest room in our house! LOL! They are our babies! Thank you!

When I wake up and I'm sitting at the computer and Bailey wants me to get up and get her her morning cookie. Bailey starts by trying to pull my blanket off my lap and when that doesn't work, she takes my socks off my feet, always taking special care not to nip a toe in the process. My day wouldn't start out the same if she didn't go through her "cookie NOW routine".

  94. I am not certain I would call it 'special', but it is certainly part of my day. When I get ready for bed, if my dog is not right there, I make certain to call him, since I know he woud show up soon anyway, and then I lift him up onto the bed. As an almost 7 yr. old dachshund chihuahua mix, he has developed the spinal problem so many of both breeds have, and although medication keeps him so comfortable that you wouldn't think he had a problem from the way he runs around, he cannot jump up on the bed anymore. Leaving him down is NOT an option, and anyone who has had a crying dog knows that! Of course, we do it in reverse in the mornings!

  123. My cat is a great alarm clock - she lets me know it’s time to feed her (gets up on the desk between me and the computer and purrs at me) and lets me know it time to go to bed (because she sleeps on me… I’ve got to go to bed so she can go to bed). She also just 'happens' to end up in whichever room I'm in, if I move, she just happens to move... very neat!

She wakes me up every morning when it's time for her to be fed - we'll walk out into the kitchen together and stop to soak up some sun streaming in the window along the way. 170. We had a dog "Molly Brown" when I was a kid that could climb the 5ft fence to roam the neighborhood & became good friends with a man nearby who did appliance repair in his garage... I remember my parents being so frustrated with trying to keep her contained and fearful she could be hit by a car if she roamed through a nearby intersection, but nearly every time she escaped we would find her hanging out with the repairman. It got to where we could actually just phone his house to send her home as if she were one of the kids :) vickismail77 at yahoo.com

  174. OH!!! Everyday is a special day with my 3 sweet baby girls!!! They have trained us well so we have our routine down pat with them. When they are ready to have their breakfast, I head to the back porch and get their bowls....Molly, the 8 year old Golden and usually pretty sedate old gal, starts her daily jumping in the air as she is so exited to eat! It's so funny to watch as she never does this, ONLY when she is getting ready to be fed...and I mean all 4 legs off the ground at once!!! It's hysterical!!! Then after a while out back I let them in and she RUNS to the leather couch, covered in an old soft blanket, that is "HER SPOT". One of the Border Collies, Millie, lays at the front door, staring out, guarding the house and the other Border Collie, Maybe, is sitting at my feet or following me from room to room, every step I go....and such is our day!!! My dogs are such an important part of my everyday life...Much is centered around their comfort and happiness, which in turn...MAKES ME HAPPY!!!
