EUROPA CANTAT XIX Hungary, PĂŠcs 2015 24 July - 2 August

ffestival programme for singers, conductors, composers and managers + practical information

Dear choral music lovers,

dear friends, Zoltán Kodály believed and confessed that “the function of music is getting to know our inner world better, flourishing and expanding it”. Pécs, the city of culture is proud to safeguard the heritage of Kodály by having an emphasis on the choral movement. We are proud of our choirs not only for their outstanding results at national and international scenes, but also because they build communities. This is why we can worthily say that Pécs is the capital of choirs. In 1988 we hosted the EUROPA CANTAT festival and in 2010 - when Pécs was European Capital of Culture - the Pécs Cantat 2010 choral festival was organised with great success. Therefore Pécs is happy to welcome singers again in 2015 and to let them fill the city with music!

2015 will be a festal year as after 3 years choral music is going to celebrate again its biggest feast. EUROPA CANTAT comes back to our country, and the cultural world’s attention turns to Europe, Hungary and the City of Pécs. We Hungarians are delighted to host the participating choirs, due also to the rich choral traditions of Pécs and of Kodály’s and Bartók’s country. The Government of Hungary and Pécs, the 2000 year old world heritage location shall provide the festival with all necessary conditions. The Hungarian and international teams of the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat have been working for years on creating an unforgettable cultural fiesta in Pécs. To achieve this we don’t need anything else but you – be our guest!

Dr. Zsolt Páva

Dr. Péter Hoppál

Lord Mayor of Pécs, City of County Rank

Conductor Secretary of State for Culture Ministry of Human Resources

PÉCS Pécs is the fifth biggest city of Hungary located in the South-Western part of the country, with a buzzing cultural life and an outstanding choral movement. The city has already hosted the EUROPA CANTAT festival in 1988, a historic moment both for Pécs, Hungary and the European Federation of Young Choirs at that time, as the festival was organised for the first time ever in the Eastern part of Europe, behind the “Iron Curtain”. The city went through major changes during 2010 when Pécs was European Capital of Culture. Public squares were renovated, a new concert hall, the Kodály Centre was built and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter was created from an old porcelain factory. You will have the chance to discover all these venues during the festival, as programmes will be organised all over the city! The music programme of the EUROPA CANTAT XIX Pécs 2015 festival has been developed along three guidelines, with a strong reflection on the unique qualities and atmosphere of the host city: CROSSROADS of cultures, religions and choral identities ROOTS AND FRUITS – heritage and innovation, from folk traditions to new musical genres OPEN GATES – open up to meet people and new choral music of undiscovered richness

10

ATELIERS The festival offers 57 ateliers for singers lasting from 4 to 8 days of rehearsals and ending with a public concert. It is possible to combine two 4-day ateliers (part a and part b) or to stay on after your atelier, attending some of the discovery ateliers or programme for conductors and composers. Some ateliers (when it says “+1) contain a free day for tourism (or for attending discovery ateliers or lectures) before the final concert. Group and choir members can apply for and be divided into different ateliers. Indicate three ateliers of your choice and apply by 30th November 2014 and your participation will be guaranteed in at least one of the three (unless ateliers have to be cancelled due to lack of applications)!

FLEXIBLE PARTICIPATION Staying 4 to 8 days with “package deals”

Day-by-day participation with One-day tickets

By booking a “package deal” you can participate for 4,5,6,7 or 8 days (with your musical programme starting on 25.07. at 9.30 a.m. or on 29.07. at 9.30 a.m.).

If you just want to get a taste of the festival, you can also come for one or a few days, attending discovery ateliers or the programme for conductors and composers, Open Singing and the festival concerts. One-day tickets can be purchased in advance (from March 2015) or directly on the morning of your participation. Participants buying One-day tickets must arrange their own accommodation and meals.

The length of your stay chosen at registration must at least correspond to the number of days for your longest atelier of choice. In case your attributed atelier will be shorter, you can change your length of stay until 15.03.2015. • The festival begins on Friday 24.07. with the check-in and a welcome event. • Full participation is 8 days, from 25.07. to 01.08., with possible arrival on Friday 24.07. and latest departure on Sunday morning, 02.08. • Shorter package days of 4 to 7 days can only be booked with activity starting on 25.07. or 29.07. and in case you need accommodation, arrival on 24.07. or 28.07. The departure date can vary, your earliest possible departure is after your final performance or – if you book accommodation – the morning after. • Y ou can stay longer than the duration of your atelier and participate during your ‘empty’ days in discovery ateliers and other programmes.

36

Participation conditions Participation fees and discounts For participation of 4 to 8 days you need to pay a fee, which includes for the days of participation all the morning activities (ateliers, discovery ateliers, special programmes), daily Open Singing, free admission to most festival concerts and reduced entrance to a few concerts with admission fee, as well as the songbook and the guide with the festival programme. The fee depends on the length of your stay, your country of residence and your age and you can get discounts if you are a direct or indirect member of the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat (ECA-EC). Check www.eca-ec.org -> Members -> How to Join to get more information regarding conditions for direct membership!

The participation fee is calculated per full day of activity, starting with morning activities and ending with evening concerts of a given day. For those arriving the day before, the afternoon and evening programmes of the arrival days (24.07. or 28.07.) are offered for free by the festival. Check the participation fees on page 48. The fee also applies to conductors, composers, pianists, musicians, bus drivers, and all other accompanying people as long as they wish to use any services provided by the festival (accommodation, meals, free access to the venues of the festival which are not open to the public, etc.) and thus will need a festival badge. Children under 11 (born after 02.08.2004) will not pay a participation fee if they do not participate in an atelier or special projects (E). They have to pay for their accommodation and meals.

Children up to 6 years at the E1 musical pre-kindergarten and E2 musical kindergarten pay (regardless of membership of ECA-EC): €20/day from Country Group 1. €15/ day from Country Group 2. €10/day from Country Group 3. ORGANISATION European Choral Association Europa Cantat The European Choral Association – Europa Cantat is a network of organisations, choirs and individuals and offers information and services about the choral world as well as choral activities in Europe. It is the result of a merger between Europa Cantat - European Federation of Young Choirs, and AGEC, completed in 2011. Are you searching for inspiration or do you want to meet singers, conductors, composers and managers of all ages? We invest in capacity building and training, in connecting people from different communities and in raising awareness for the benefits of singing, and we offer opportunities to people who like singing and learning from each other. More on www.EuropeanChoralAssociation.org The Association with its festivals including the EUROPA CANTAT festival is a member of the International Choral Festival Network www.choralfestivalnetwork.org

EUROPA CANTAT Pécs 2015 Nonprofit Ltd. The festival is realized by EUROPA CANTAT Pécs 2015 Nonprofit Ltd, created by the Pécs Municipal Government, the Association of Hungarian Choirs and Orchestras– KOTA and the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat.
