Adam Schefter thinks Giants' Ben McAdoo is a front-runner to land Eagles job

The Eagles appear to have hit the pause button on their search for Chip Kelly's replacement as head coach, but that doesn't mean there aren't front-runners for the job.

ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter thinks that the Eagles coaching search is nearing a conclusion and that a pair of offensive coordinators -- including Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo -- are the top choices of owner Jeffrey Lurie, President Don Smolenski and Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman.

"I don't know that [Pederson]'s the front-runner," Schefter said Wednesday during his weekly appearance on 97.5 FM The Fanatic with Anthony Gargano. "I know that he's square in contention for that job, I know they really like him. In my mind, my sense -- these are just senses -- is that Ben McAdoo is the front-runner. But I don't know that to be right. I think Pederson and McAdoo both are square in the conversation.

"I think Tom Coughlin's interview went well. You can't meet with him and not be impressed by the coach and man he is. But ultimately, as good and as impressive as he is, I just think the Eagles' model here is to find someone that they can work with for the next 10 to 15 years and I don't think Tom Coughlin fits that description as good of a coach as he is...

"Maybe even Pat Shurmur would be in consideration because he is a very good football coach. But to me, I would handicap McAdoo as the favorite for whatever that's worth and we'll see if that's proven right."

McAdoo is one of the six candidates the Eagles interviewed for the job, in addition to running back's coach Duce Staley, Shurmur, Pederson, newly-hired Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase and two-time Super Bowl champion former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.

Coughlin and Lurie also met privately prior to the formal job interview on Tuesday, according to Schefter.

Lurie has a penchant for hiring head coaches with a background on offense and McAdoo has worked with the likes of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Giants two-time Super Bowl winning Giants quarterback Eli Manning, which could make him an attractive option for the Eagles given the uncertainty at the position.

Multiple reports say the Eagles have no plans to interview any new candidates, which if true, puts McAdoo firmly in the running for the job.

Meanwhile, Schefter went on to explain that he doesn't believe that Kelly will land an NFL job this offseason.
