The Gifted Ones #1

A Sorceress of His Own

Rate this book
From the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Immortal Guardians series comes an enchanting new series full of romance, danger, and loyalty: The Gifted Ones

Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.

For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed--or cursed--with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.

All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything--even the wrath of his king--to be with her.

I loved Dianne Duvall from the first book of hers that I picked up, Darkness Dawns from the Immortal Guardians series. With each book of hers I have read my love has grown, and this book is no different. Dianne Duvall continues to impress me with her writing . Wow did I love this book!!! I enjoyed everything about it and the only wish I had for this book, was that it was longer.

"A few hours in my arms and you believe yourself capable of sorcery. Mayhap wizardry does course through my veins."

What this book is about

Lord Dillon is rumored to be one of the most savage warriors there is. Everyone fears him making his a lonely life. Sick of Battle and death he longs for a wife to bring him peace. One who would not fear him. One who be a Helpmeet to him, a partner. One he can love and be tender to. One like his wise woman. To bad his wise woman is old, or is she? After healing a mortal wound on him his wise woman is dying. Healing him she has taken on his wounds. Having never seen her before he takes off the robes that have covered her completely for the last 7 years and finds she is young, beautiful and the bride he has seen in his dreams. Now that he knows the true her, he will not lose her to death or anything else!

"I chose n-not to live... in a... w-world with... out you in it." "Then do not condemn me to a similar fate," he pleaded. "Do not leave me. I need you. You were right that night, when we talked of the woman I longed to have by my side, to grow old with. She does exist. But if you die, you will take her with you and deny me the happiness I have sought. Stay with me, please, and I shall spend the rest of my days thanking you."

Dillon:

Dillon is a sweet and good man. A great warrior, with a kind heart. He takes good care of his people and serves his King with honor. I love Dillon. He has such a romantic heart. The way he is with Alyssa had me swooning. He is sexy, playful, and treated her with respect. Dominant without being controlling, he still lets Alyssa be who she is . I love that he supports her and sticks up for her to his closed minded people. He is very stubborn too, not letting all the obstacles that would keep him and Alyssa apart keep him from having her.

"You see me better than anyone. You must know how I feel about you." When she would have spoken, he shook his head. "You are a brilliant strategist and have guided me well these seven years past. Do not abandon this particular quest so easily." He brushed her lips with a gentle kiss. "Please, Alyssa. You have fought by my side before. Do so one last time and I promise you the reward will be far greater than we ever dreamed."

"I burn for you, Alyssa. I tried to wait, wanted you to rest. But I am so greedy for you. I have to have you."

Alyssa:

 photo alyssa 41_zpsloua4izh.jpg

Alyssa is awesome. She is strong and giving. Loving Dillon from afar knowing she couldn't show him the true her, and having to watch him with other women. Taking that hurt so she could serve him as his wise woman, and heal him. She is a truly unselfish person. The way she helped anyone she could even when they treated her with scorn just shows what a good hearted person she is. She is brave, sweet, and very loving. I loved that she did not fear Dillon and stood up for what she believes in.

"I love you, Dillon." Joy and pain surged through him. How he had longed to hear those words cross her lips. "Forgive me for n-not saying it ere now. I have been so foolish. I have loved you for so long. And, w-when we were taken, I feared I would not have the chance to tell you."

"I will heal your men, Dillon," she declared, implacable. "Whether it be now or as soon as your back is turned I shall leave up to you. I would remind you, however, that putting it off and allowing the wounds to fester will only result in more pain when I eventually get my hand on them."

 photo dillon and alyssa_zpsz8i2x4c1.jpg

"My need to see you safe. 'Tis not an affliction, but love that feeds it. Should that not please you?"

Dillon and Alyssa have a sweet relationship built on friendship, respect and a deep love. They are so cute together and playful. Dayum when they come together it was hott! I loved the plot of this story and the world it is set in. I Loved Dillon's brother Robert and I hope he gets his own book. OMG Seth, Marcus and Roland from the Immortal Guardian series have small parts in this book. The Happy end had me smiling so big! I really loved this book. I can't wait for the next one and I hope we see more Immortal Guardian cameos! Great read I totally recommend it!

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Just Didn't Feel The Re-Read*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Re-read: 17.10.2020
DNF at 47%: The book centers around healer Alyssa was 16 when she took the many responsibilities of being Westcott’s wisewoman. Now 7 years later she's starting the resent the rope hiding her from the world, and from Dillon, the Earl of Westcott, the man whom she has admired and loved. The re-read started out alright and just that. And then when I hit the 47% (chapter 10) I just didn't feel it anymore. It didn't feel right with I just lost interest after that. Also, I think Dillon wasn't alpha male enough for me to enjoy this book - as you know me, the male character is the most important character in a book for me. Overall I won't rate it anew as I didn't finish it, I'll just leave it as it were.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Fantasy Romance (M/F)
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - No one.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Unsure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Don't think so.
Will I read this again in the future? - Don't think so.
New Rating - NO NEW RATING DUE TO DNF.

First read review :
That ending...kinda ruined the book. You have to read it to understand. I feel, almost, cheated :O

DNF @ 35%

This has to be one of the most clichéd and boring books I've ever read.

The story starts with Alyssa, the Wisewoman's granddaughter who, at sixteen, believes herself madly in love with Lord Dillon, whom her grandmother serves.
I know we're all familiar with love at first sight, but this is actually love at NO SIGHT.
This girl has literally NEVER met this guy.
But she fell in love with what she knows of him from the things her grandmother tells her, despite him being known as a bloodthirsty cruel man.

So off she sets to take her grandmother's place, disguising herself as an old woman, painting age spots on her hands, and faking a feeble voice, all at the age of sixteen even if her entire family tells her she's being stupid.

Mary Sue that she is, she single-handedly defeats Dillon's enemies even though they'd been laying siege to the fortress forever. Apparently, during a siege, people just walk right in and out of a fortress, and go around poisoning the ENTIRETY of the fortress' inhabitants.

Seven years pass and we're told, not shown, that Dillon and Alyssa become bff, playing games, unburdening their hearts to each other, etcetera.

This girl has zero personality. Her entire existence revolves around her precious Dillon. Not that I can say much about Dillon either, since his entire existence revolves around... nothing at all.

Thankfully, Dillon dreams of his future bride, who is, of course, Alyssa, so when he is brutally wounded and Alyssa selflessly takes his wounds for herself while healing him her true guise is discovered.

Desperate confessions of love are professed because OMG SHE'S HOT NOW and he can't lose her!
"“Nay,” he denied, his heartbeat thundering in his ears. “Nay! Nay!” he repeated, his voice rising to a shout. “Do not leave me, Seer! You cannot!"

Yes, I know it's the nae nae, not nay nay.

Quite honestly, I couldn't keep going after this.
The plot is barely existent, the pacing is fast and boring at the same time, the characters are a Mary Sue and a Gary Stu, their romance is implausible, and the entire story reeks of immaturity - if it weren't for the sexual content I'd say the book would be suitable for very young teens.

I'm giving it one star instead of zero stars for the language used, which was period appropriate, but that's literally the only good thing about this book.

I'm not sure how to class this book. Is it fantasy if it's based in medieval times but with magic powers? I have no clue. It's based around 1191 with Richard I as King. But clearly our heroine has powers. Do not expect a grand historical with minute details of life in medieval times, even the King isn't mentioned that much. The historical aspect is the setting, the magic and it's impact the plot.

Alyssa decides to take her grandmothers place as Wisewoman/advisor to Lord Dillon. In order to do so she disguises her self in her grandmothers cloaks, mimics her voice and hides her hands.

description

From the beginning you know that her and her family possess gifts. And that her family is opposed to her decision but abide by it. It's also clear they feel her disguise not only necessary but vital. It makes sense in medieval times fear and crime ran rampant and anyone with extraordinary gifts was shunned(or worse) and that is made abundantly clear throughout the book. Alyssa is determined to help Lord Dillon with all the power she has inside her as she's already half way in-love with him.

description

Lord Dillons name precedes him. He is feared and respected across the land and valued by the King who bestows castles to him. He also has to lay siege and fight the previous Lords to get them in the name of his King. Lord Dillon is weary. Weary of fighting, weary of being feared especially by women, weary of not having a respite to invigorate him. All he truly desires is a loving, gentle wife for him to love and pamper. Alas all he gets are wenches that want him for his money and only wish for a rough tumble with him. To my friends with triggers :

When a life threatening injury fells our handsome knight Alyssa sacrifices her self to save him. Dillon discovers that the old sorceress is a beautiful young maiden instead and the plot thickens from there on. Passion flares, dastardly villains plan, peasants and knights get humble pie in their faces.

I spent a lovely few hours immersed in this book and I'm quite happy about it. To fans of Dianne Duvall you have a cameo appearance from some of her Immortal Guardians characters. For me as this was my first book from her I didn't even realise until she mentioned it after the ending.

What more did I want? I wanted more explanations about their gifts. A bit more info on the origins of their powers. Though I suspect some of that might be in her Immortal Guardians series. Also some phrases sounded a bit samey and cliche here and there. Overall though a solid start to a new series that I intend to follow.

"Our people have been made well aware of who my bride is and will welcome you with open arms." Glancing away from her, he muttered,"Or risk losing their heads."

description

Big yes.

I think some of my friends would definitely enjoy this book. It's absolutely no-brainer, it's fluffy, there are some swoon-worthy moments and no angst.

Hundreds of years ago, at the beginning of King Richard the Lion heart's reign, there are some people who has special powers. Let's call them the Gifted Ones beause...well, they are gifted.

So this Gifted Ones were in danger because people back then hates and fear those who have some special mumu. Like "I'll-burn-you-in-the-stakes" kind of hate.

description

So of course, they have to be really quiet about their identity because who ever wants to be killed by fire?

But Alyssa (our heroine, who else?) has always been a little bit in love with Lord Dillon, the most badass and the most fearsome lord in the land of far away. For seven years, under the anonimity of her cloak and voice changer (I'm not kidding, she has powers so she can change her voice), she has been the wisewoman to Dillon, giving advices, free medical check ups and shits.

It's all a bit sad for Alyssa in the beginning because she knows she and Dillon won't have the "YOU+ME=TOGETHER" thing. Everyone thinks she's the same wisewoman who served Dillon's father and grandfather.

But of course, the universe has always been a romantic, so when Dillon's life was threatened, Alyssa's true identity was revealed and hola!, "you and me against the world" began.

description

This is really a fun and easy read. Dillon has always been protective of Alyssa even though he still thinks she's an old woman and Alyssa's loyalty is a bit humbling.

And did I mention there are some hot guys in a cloak in here?

“You should not have hidden the truth from me.”
“W-What truth?”
“That the woman I have waited and searched so long for has been by my side for years.”

Alyssa is a gifted one, with the power to heal. Because of her gifts she is labelled a sorceress, and almost all fear and despise her because of these powers. And for the last seven years she has been healing Lord Dillon and giving him council. Hiding herself from him, making him and everyone else believe her to be her grandmother who served Dillon’s father and grandfather. And for all these years she has been secretly loving Dillon from afar, holding to the promise that she would never reveal her true self to him or anyone else.

Lord Dillon is weary of battle and of being alone. His reputation of being savage on the battlefield has made it impossible for him to find any woman who could love him with the tenderness he has always craved. Everyone fears him, except the wisewoman who is always there for him.

And then Dillon is mortally wounded, and Alyssa almost loses her own life when healing him. And so the truth of Alyssa is finally revealed, and Dillon has finally found the woman he has been waiting for, for so long. But Alyssa doesn’t believe that there can be a future for them, because of her gifts and her lowly station. Luckily Dillon is used to fighting for what he wants, and he will risk everything to make her his.

This book was just wonderful. The romance between Alyssa and Dillon was so romantic, and I loved every moment of it. I especially loved how protective and possessive Dillon was over Alyssa, and how he kept fighting for her. Definitely swoon-worthy ;-)

I really enjoyed the historical setting and the plot of the book. And I really appreciated the fact that the author didn’t bombard the story with unnecessary historical information and worldbuilding.

As a fan of this author’s Immortal Guardian series, I was ecstatic to find out that some of the characters from that series plays a small part in this one: Seth, Roland and Marcus. In fact this series seem to be the prequel to the other series. And I’m so happy about that fact. We meet Marcus as a young boy, and then Robert who is Dillon’s brother. I adore Robert, and I can’t wait to read his book which will be next. And for those familiar with the Immortal Guardians series and Marcus, you will remember Bethany whom he loved for so many years, but who loved another, Robert. And finally we will find out about their story. I am so excited about that!

A wonderful book to a most promising series. Highly recommended to everyone who loves this author and PNR.

She saves him, he discovers she's not really a crusty old croon. Lusty thoughts and love making on a bed of rose petals under a star-speckled sky, with songbirds singing a beautiful melody and butterflies fanning their sweat-dampened skin in the warm night air.

And they all live happily ever after. Vomit

Okay, okay, fine I may have exaggerated a little. No, now seriously, this was a lot better than I was expecting, she was a strong female lead, he was a devoted yet rugged hero and the sex was pretty good. Thumbs up here.

Fierce warrior Lord Dillion, has garnered a reputation of being a savage fighter on the battlefield, a reputation which has led to him being feared. After so many years he is weary of battle and longs for peace and quiet and a woman, a wife who will be a companion and lover. What he doesn’t realise is the woman of his dreams may be nearer than he expects – Alyssa.

We are told 7 years have passed since Alyssa took over from her grandmother, in which time Dillion and Alyssa have become very close, yet he is still wholly unaware of the fact the woman/’Wise One’ under the dark robes is not the aged women that has always been with him. And since everyone else fears her and keeps away, Alyssa has been able to keep her secret. That is until she nearly dies saving Dillion.

A lovely light re-read, the romance is cute and the connection between the main characters clear. Although I must admit, there are things about the story and characters I wish were a little different. Alyssa at 16 thinking she was in love with Dillion, due to what she has heard from her grandmother about him. This is a man, who she has never met, something I always wrinkle my nose at when I re-read this book, it would have been nice if the author made this more believable, e.g. Alyssa throughout her short life having had visions of him and his life, or something like that. Luckily this issue is not one that drives me barney. Feelings developing or a crush becoming more, after being with him for 7 years – that’s more realistic.

Also if I take a step back, from the read, which I did do this time, it’s clear that Alyssa’s entire existence revolves around Dillion, it would have been nice to have more layers to her as a character, that being said despite myself I do enjoy this read, hence the re-read.

I liked how protective Dillion was, and found him demanding people be nice to her sweet, even if it wasn’t the best way to go about things.

This book was my introduction to the author and an introduction I do not regret. The book/story is a good mixture of romance (of course), light action and magic. A nice bit of escapism.

Great read, I loved it!

4 stars

This is the first book in the Gifted ones series, but it actually ties into Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series, as a prequel of sorts. Set in 12th century England, it is the story of Gifted One, Alyssa, and Lord Dylan, the warrior with a romantic heart.

A Gifted One is a human who possesses special powers. In Alyssa’s case, this is the power of healing, with some seer abilities. She is constantly subjected to scorn and hatred by those who fear her gifts and suspect she may be a witch, but it doesn’t stop her from offering her assistance whenever she can. In order to protect herself, she lives a mostly solitary life and covers herself in a thick cloak and, never allowing anybody to see her true appearance and disguising her voice to sound like her grandmother who held the positon before her.

The only person who appreciates her presence is Lord Dylan. Dylan is a savage warrior who longs for peace. His encounters with women who want him just for his harsh dominance have left him cold, and he longs for warmth and companionship, somebody who can be a true partner and make him happy. But the closest relationship he has is with his ‘wise woman’ – the one he believes is the same elderly woman who served his father. For seven years he has opened up to her, discussed strategy with her and accepted her counsel, and she has become a true friend to him. She is the one person that he feels he can turn to, and he treasures her place in his life.

When tragedy strikes and Alyssa ends up in trouble, Dylan is determined to help her, but in doing so he removes her robes and sees the woman beneath for the first time. His heart is immediately captured by the young beauty, and given all that they have already shared together and the affection that he has for her, the leap to love is only natural.

Alyssa has loved Dylan since she first came to work for him, so though she is shocked and dismayed that her secret is out, she can’t resist his advances, and on my holy hotness! Like the love stories in the Immortal Guardians series, things progress quickly between our love-struck couple and their relationship is angst-free and absolutely functional. Though Alyssa’s secret must be kept for her own safety, she is completely free with Dylan, and behind closed doors their relationship develops beautifully.

“You were right that night, when we talked of the woman I longed to have by my side, to grow old with. She does exist … Stay with me, please, and I shall spend the rest of my days thanking you.”

But as deeply connected and in love as they are, Dylan is of the nobility and without noble blood, Alyssa sees no future for them. Dylan doesn’t care a bit about such rules. He loves Alyssa, he wants her, and he has every intention of having a future with her. And his besotted declarations are swoony as all hell!

He brushed her lips with a gentle kiss. “Please, Alyssa. You have fought by my side before, do so one last time, and I promise you the reward will be far greater than we ever dreamed.”

The love story is beautifully told, and blends nicely in with the rest of the action happening in the book – Dylan’s responsibilities as Lord see him constantly battling to protect his people and he is facing down a dangerous enemy - a neighbouring nobleman who has plans to destroy him (and his wife woman). And closer to home there is the ongoing battle for Alyssa to gain acceptance amongst his people. And through it all Dylan’s fierce protectiveness is awesome, and it balances beautifully with his sweet and loving romantic side. I really loved the addition of Dylan’s brother, Robert, to the story. He is a great character, sweet, loyal and funny as all hell, and I’m hoping we get to see more of him in future books (and Immortal Guardians fans will love the brief cameos from Seth and Roland!). I thought Duvall did a great job with the historical aspects of the story. Her writing is descriptive yet interesting, and her consistency with the use of language and the beliefs of the time really helps to suck you into the story.

Together, it’s all very exciting, and I devoured this book from start to finish. There’s a lot of scope for this series to develop, and I’m looking excited to see where it’s all going to go.

I loved it – 4 stars.

I went into this book thinking that it was going to be a fantasy romance but instead, it was PNR set in a medieval period (or a historical romance with supernatural elements.) I still haven't decided which.

The premise was great but it really didn't work for me when I realized that not every noble had his own "wise woman" in tow. If her powers were so rare, why wouldn't the King himself take her to work for him? When it was proven that she could heal wounds with her hands, the freaking Bishop of Canterbury should have gotten involved! Instead, the story became about narrow minded people who didn't really understand her. *snort* And because medieval people were so enlightened **double snort**, they all understood at the end that she wasn't really a spawn of the devil and accepted her.

The hero was supposed to be this fierce guy everybody feared but I never saw why. He was actually pretty nice and we never saw his ruthless side.

Not continuing the series.

A Sorceress of His Own takes us to 1198 England and the keep of Lord Dillon, Earl of Wescott. Feared by many and respected by all, Dillon is a fierce warrior, defender of the crown, and a fair lord. His chief advisor and resident healer is the "Wisewoman." Cloaked in dark robes, no one has seen her face. Others perceive her an old woman whom some believe is immortal. She served both his father and grandfather.

There is much Dillon does not know about his Wisewoman. At the age of sixteen, Alyssa took over the role of Wisewoman from her grandmother when Dillon came into power. Alyssa has had a crush on Dillon since she first laid eyes on him and witnesses a kindness. He knows her only as an old woman since she alters her voice and uses magic to conceal her youthful hands. She is both a healer and a seer.

I absolutely loved the story that unfolded and the period is such a dangerous time for someone like Alyssa. Duvall creates characters that I instantly connect with and pulled me into their romance giving me all the feels, swoons, and giggles I could ask for.

I loved how fierce, stubborn and yet caring Alyssa was. She readily makes sacrifices for others and yet denies herself. I loved her transformation throughout the story and the way in which her relationship changed with Dillon's men and with those in the keep.

Dillon is all warrior, and yet in his chambers, he reveals a gentler side. He cares for his people, wants someone strong by his side. He enjoys pillow talk and places value in others opinions. He is protective and dominant without being overly possessive.

The romance was completely swoon-worthy and unrushed. Duvall slowly allowed their relationship to develop, giving us tender moments, moments of discovery and yes-unbridled passion. I loved the teaser, banter, moments of misunderstandings and resolutions. There are SO MANY awesome quotes filled with snark and humor I wanted to share with you but think you should discover them on your own.

Politics, betrayals, battles, and mortal wounds surrounded the romance giving us a sense of this world, government, and climate. The story was addictive as Dillon and his soldiers faced nemesis. Alyssa had visions of danger to come. We faced twists, turns, and unknowns that placed our hero and heroine in peril.

Duvall is a masterful storyteller who fleshes out her worlds and gives depth to her characters. Even her secondary characters are memorable. I loved the thread about the gifted ones and loved that Seth (from Immortal Guardians) has been protecting gifted ones all of this time.

Kristen Potter narrated, and she was perfect for this tale. This was my first experience with Potter, but I must confess it will not be my last. Her voices, tones, and accents were spot on creating another layer to an already brilliant tale.

This first installment in Duvall’s new Gifted One series takes readers to 1198 England. Fierce warrior Lord Dillon, Earl of Wescott wants something that all of his warring and concurring has never attained him. In fact the warring and conquering have hindered him in acquiring the one thing he wants most, he desires a bride. More than anything he wants a constant companion, partner, and confidant in that bride. The only person that comes close to meeting those criteria is the wizened old Wise Woman who is his near constant shadow and advisor.

Alyssa took on the title of Wise Woman at a young age. Readers go through the passing of the robes so to speak with her. We really get to know her seven years into her time with Dillon as his trusted Seer. Her childhood crush has turned into full blown love by this time. It is all one sided though. He has no clue that she is not the same woman who served his father, and grandfather before that. She does more than just heals his wounds though. She is the balm that heals his very soul and soothes him in a way that only someone who loves can.

I am not typically a fan of historical romances. I prefer present day or futuristic. The story here is so amazingly good that it never bothered me. Alyssa and Dillon have so many obstacles in their way. Some are obvious, some not so much. The one thing that always remained was just how much of a fighter Dillon was. He was a man on a mission. Once he found out that he could have Alyssa it didn’t matter how much she denied that they could ever truly be together. He was having none of it. It all makes for a very passionate while exciting tale.

I’m going to guess that I am the only reader that went into this book not noticing the series name. So just in case you’re wondering Diannne Duvall has given her readers a different look at her Gifted Ones. There are even a couple of familiar faces for a brief moment. With that said one does not need to be familiar with her Immortal Guardians to thoroughly enjoy A Sorceress of His Own. I can’t wait to see where this series is going and who will be the next set of main characters.

This is had the 'feel' of one of Kristen Ashley's stories - except that it was 100% less rapey and 100% less annoyingly written. The hero 'respected' the heroine. Crazy, I know.

I let one of my colleagues choose what book I was reading last night (really, I set her loose on Amazon with my login details) and I'm soooooo glad I did. I can definitely see myself re-reading this one again sometime. It wasn't the most amazingly written book I have ever read, not even close. But, the story was just that perfect story i needed for a Friday night with a bottle of wine.

The author describes this book as a prequel to the Immortal Guardians but it has a different feel to it.

I really enjoyed this one because while it focused a lot on Dillon and Alyssa, the author still kept me guessing as to who was trying to kill Lord Dillon and their motives. There was a lot of passion but there was a lot of adventure too.

Dianne Duvall always creates likable characters and this book was no exception. The plot was very interesting and engaging. I couldn’t stop listening to the book. I found Alyssa and Dillon very hot but also very charming as a couple. The years of friendship added a layer of understanding and genuine respect for each other. They truly understood each other and were caring of each other’s professional responsibilities. I loved the sacrifices they were willing to make to protect the other, yet keeping the community in mind.

I would recommend readers start with that series first though. If you want suspense, action, love, supernatural abilities and great world building, you have to try Dianne Duvall’s books. I cannot wait for the next installment of the Immortal Guardians.

Dianne Duvall takes readers on a sweeping, powerful journey through 12th century England in a time rife with superstition where finding, and keeping, love is an arduous battle for even the most hardened of knights.

Alyssa has been in love with Lord Dillon, the Earl of Wescott, since the day she saw him defend her grandmother as a child. Now, years later she is by his side as his adviser, healer, and friend. But for the last seven years Lord Dillon has only ever known her as the ancient wise woman hidden behind her black robes. When in a desperate bid to save his life unveils Alyssa's true self, Dillon is astonished to find the woman he thought was but a dream. The woman he wants for his wife. Now he must convince Alyssa that birthplace, bigotry, and Kings mean little to him when it comes to the desire he has for her to be by his side. Alyssa and Dillon soon discovered though that those aren't the only hurdles they must overcome if they ever hope for a future together.

A Sorceress of His Own begins the (kind of) prequel series to Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardian's. Being a fan of this author already I was looking forward to more exceptional writing and vivid characters, what I found though was so much more! Let me preface this review by stating that you do not need to read Duvall's previous series/books to understand A Sorceress of His Own. And fans of the Immortal Guardians should not come in expecting the same type of world or setting with this story because it is completely new and different, but oh so good!

Phrase by enticing phrase, Duvall weaves a spellbinding tale of unrequited love that soon turns into the forbidden. First we have Alyssa, a powerful young woman who has been scorned and feared most of her life because of her unnatural gift. Her character endeared itself to me from the first page with her determination to help her grandmother, protect her family, and sacrifice herself and her heart for Lord Dillon. I couldn't help but root for her and a happy ending from the get-go. Lord Dillon was such a strong, solitary character at the beginning of the story that I was surprised by the soft underbelly that was revealed as the story progressed. This is a man that will go to the ends of the earth for those he considers his and the battle he fought with his own people to pave the road for Alyssa's acceptance... *dreamy sigh* This is the kind of hero you expect to read about and fall in love with in historical romances. His heartfelt desire for a companion and confident, a true partner in a wife, was swoon worthy as well. There were several secondary characters throughout the tale that captured my attention and I look forward to seeing more from them in future books. There were also one or two cameo's from Immortal Gaurdian characters that fans are sure to squee over.

Aside from the captivating characters, Duvall also does a remarkable job transitioning from contemporary to historical. The world-building in A Sorceress of His Own is colorful and authentic. The medieval language doesn't weigh down the dialogue and feels natural. While the plot moves at a steady pace throughout the story. I was completely engaged from beginning to end; I never wanted the story to end and dreaded finally reaching that last page.

All in all, Dianne Duvall has delivered a gripping story-line with characters that stuck with me throughout the day and continue to do so long after I turned that last page. A must read for 2015, grab your copy today!

REVIEW:
Amazing!! I have fell in love with Ms. Duvall and her Immortal Guardian series (waiting not so patiently for the next books). So when Ms. Duvall said she was writing a book about ‘The Gifted Ones’ and how the whole Immortal Guardian world came about I was beyond excited to read. When I was given the chance to read an advance copy I was over the moon. Then I opened the book.
And fell in love this this book.
Alyssa is great!! I loved that she sacrifices so much for what she believes in and who she loves even if she knows she will never get her heart desire. Alyssa shows over and over in this book why she is such a great wisewoman and deserves all the respect. I was rooting for her on every page.
Lord Dillon starts out a bit stuffy and rough. But as the story goes on we get to see what lays below the surface. What is under there is an amazing guy who is willing to do anything for those he calls his own. No matter how many people he threatens with beheading.
Seriously loved this book!! I can’t wait for the next book in the series, because there has to be more!!!! Oh and Immortal Guardian fans hold on to your hat because we get a cameo from someone in chapter 5. Yes I had a little bit of an “Oh my goodness!!” moment when they walked in on the pages :)
Pick up a copy of this book and fall in love with ‘The Gifted Ones’

It's been awhile since my Immortal Guardian book and this story reminds me how much I miss this author's writing. I really like the historical setting in the Immortal Guardian's world. I love this hidden/mistaken identity trope, but wondered how Dianne Duvall would proceed after a fairly early reveal. Not to fret, she does wonderful job. . I am a sucker for stories that involve noble self-sacrifice. I really liked the characters and felt connected to their stories. The author does a wonderful job keeping the story goes at a good pace. I did not lose attention once. I eagerly look forward to Robert's story next!

But mostly wrong, wrong, wrong cover. Use man titties, it's more honest.

I was disappointed by this book.

I've read my share of romance novels. Most allow the feelings and infatuation to be experienced throughout the action. I kept asking myself how so many pages could be consumed with nothing happening but what's in the protagonist's head.

I also found the man unrealistic. What man swoons ALL THE TIME about a woman? This guy was obsessed nigh to the exclusion of much else, with this woman who has been persecuted. Enough already!

I couldn't take any more and won't be reading the next in the series.

I like this author's Immortal Guardians series, like the note that she had at the beginning where this story came before that series and it is loosely connected.

I felt for Alyssa and the situation she was in. She was hiding so much. I liked when Alyssa's secrets came out and Robert's eyes were opened. This changed things for them both, gave them both love and acceptance. I was glad that things worked out and they were able to actually marry while still keeping their station in life.

I got to 22% and was just so so frustrated with the ever giving virginal FMC and the oblivious MMC who took SEVEN YEARS to figure out that just maybe she was being treated like shit. Ugh no thanks.

This was a great start to a new series. I've loved Duvall's Immortal Guardians series (that starts with Darkness Dawns) and was very pleased to hear that she was writing a historical story about the early "Gifted Ones". There's no mention of Immortals (or vampires) in this story outside of a brief cameo by Seth and Roland (from the Immortal Guardians series) so this story can be easily read without having read the other series.

Alyssa is a gifted one...someone that was born with special powers. She has the ability to heal, read emotions and is a bit of a seer. Her grandmother had similar powers and served as the "wise woman" for Dillan's Father and Grandfather but when she grew too old, Alyssa took over as the wise woman for Lord Dillan. She hid her youth under a cowled robe and disguised her voice so everyone thought she was the same wise woman that had served the family for years.

Dillan is an Earl and is a feared warrior that has favor with the King. He's gained much but is weary of the constant fighting and the mostly undeserved reputation he's gained over the years. He longs for peace and a woman that will love him and be a companion, not fear him like most women do. Dillan's only family is his younger brother Robert (for those that have read the Immortal Guardians series...yes, that Robert) who he loves fiercely.

When Alyssa took over the position of wise woman from her Grandmother, she swore to always hide her youth from others. Mostly this was because people were very superstitious and there was protection making people think she was the same woman that had always served Dillan's family. She served Dillan for 7 years under the guise of an elderly woman but when Dillan was ambushed on the way to take a castle the King had granted him he took serious wounds. This started a progression of events that led to him finding out that Alyssa was actually a young and beautiful woman.

As the wise woman, Alyssa has been Dillan's friend and one of the few women that didn't fear him. When he actually sees her for the first time, he falls for her instantly, knowing she would be the perfect companion for him and wanting nothing more than to make her his. While this is happy news for Alyssa, she is saddened because she's not of noble birth and they could never be married and eventually Dillan would be expected to take a wife. Dillan is determined to find a way to keep Alyssa and marry her and Robert decides to help him in this endeavor. Unfortunately, there's some trouble when the Lord of the Keep the King granted to Dillan doesn't want to give up his holding (not that I understood how he could think to stand against the King even if he managed to fend off Dillan). Dillan and Alyssa have to deal with treachery and danger and things aren't easy for them. Thankfully, things work out well and the story ends with Dillan and Alyssa happily starting a HEA together.

I enjoyed this story so very much! Alyssa was a great heroine...sweet and kind regardless of the hatred heaped on her by people letting superstition rule them. I really liked Dillan as well. He was a good man that just wanted someone to love. I loved seeing them together and finding a way to stay together. My only complaint with the story is that I didn't see how the bad guy thought he'd ultimately get away with his lies and such but that wasn't really a big thing. Overall I loved the story and am anxious for Robert's story. I'd recommend this story. Thumbs up. :D

+ note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a great job.

REVIEW:
I loved this book! "A Sorceress of His Own" is the first book in Dianne Duvall's Gifted Ones Series. The Gifted Ones Series is a spinoff series from The Immortal Guardians Series. Some of the characters from the Immortal Guaridans are in The Gifted Ones Series, but you do not have to read the series to enjoy this one. "A Sorceress of His Own" is a historical paranormal romance set in England. It's full of danger, intrigue and passion. Dianne Duvall brought the characters to life and delivered an addicting and exciting new series. I'm hooked! Go grab a copy and devour it!
