The Nikon full frame (24x36mm) rangefinder range started in the early 50s when they released the Nikon S. Even though it was an advanced model at the time it could only take 50mm lenses (It would take other lenses with accessory viewfinders).
In the year 2000 Nikon decided to re-release the S3 and name it the S3 Millennium. They have done only some minor adjustments so that the camera was compatible with modern film and camera operating practices (ISO instead of ASA etc.). Nikon has also designed an updated, modern multi-coated 50mm f1.4 lens to go with it. They have released only around eight thousand silver body/lens kits in the year 2000 and a further two thousand black ones in the year 2002.
The S3 Millennium is a truly beautiful camera; it is built to a very high mechanical standard and has a very high quality feel to it. Even though we are biased towards Leica we think the S3 Millennium feels and handles as good as or maybe even better than the legendary Leica M3.
If you are a collector and have some early Contax rangefinder lenses they should work on the S3 however we have not tested this.
