Sport is increasingly becoming a bigger and more diverse business. For many years, players in major competitions like the Indian Premier League, the National Basketball Association in the United States or the UK's Premier League Football have taken home extremely high salaries. However, there are many major clubs, leagues and organisations which also employ thousands of people to work in sports related areas like management, marketing and event planning.
Financial success in sport is no longer just limited to the pitch, field or court but there is business even in brokering sponsorship deals or developing innovative ways to increase numbers of spectators.
There is an increasing global demand for motivated and well-qualified sports professionals who can demonstrate an understanding of the economic benefits that well-managed and professionally supported clubs and associations can bring about. A sports manager needs to be trained to think across a number of disciplines. A manager may also have to manage sports stars, co-ordinate with other professionals , like personal trainers, physiotherapists or public relation managers.
Expertise in sports business management and sports engineering has attracted universities in the UK. This interest has developed as a result of close-working relationships with industry and educational sporting business and sports promoting associations. This has proved to be a blessing for students aiming to work in the highest levels of sports management to gain strong international awareness and experience . The University students also get a chance to volunteer at global sporting events, including the Olympics held in different parts of the world.
Rohit Ravindra from India, graduated in M.Sc. Sport Business Management from a wellknown university in the UK in 2010. He says that his degree helped him gain his dream job that was, working for one of the central sponsors for the Indian Premier League.
He stated, "My job was to oversee operations for branding and sponsorship inside the stadium as well as outside. I got this opportunity mainly due to my degree, thanks to my university. Currently I am working as a business head at the Sports Science Centre in Chennai," he confirmed. His responsibilities include, bringing in top level Olympic athletes to the sports institute for training and procure sponsorships . He also formulates a steady revenue system for the Sports Centre. He further added, "We have tied up with the International Cricket Counsel to use our high performance centre as well as our biomechanics lab. My degree was a good platform and has led me to get my dream job."
