Help us save the 3000-year tradition of Mayan weaving and craft

THE LITTLE KITE is a story of rebellion and redemption set around the Mayan Day of the Dead. A new dramatic feature film by ZapPictures, THE LITTLE KITE will be shot on location in the remote Mayan Highlands of Guatemala.

Indigenous Mayan weaving is a vibrant and complex art with a 3000 year-old tradition. This tradition is practiced and preserved solely by Mayan women who started learning the craft as children, and often take 4 to 6 months to create a single complex huipile (blouse) unique to their region . These hand-made works of wearable art supply a deep connection to the history, spirituality and identity of this ancient culture. Mayan Weaving is in the midst of a crisis that may mean an end to this ancient art form. With pressure from cheap Chinese imports and mechanization, there may not be another generation of Mayan artisans to take up this art form, which takes years to master.

THE LITTLE KITE motion picture is seeking to address this crisis by:

• Creating a mass-market motion picture for a global audience that will raise awareness and appreciation for this ancient art form, and

• Create international demand for high-quality Mayan weaving, which will financially encourage future artisans to continue the legacy of this 3000 year-old art form.

The story centers on a young Mayan girl, Tomasa, who rejects the efforts of her mother to teach her Mayan weaving. She comes to believe her rebellious rejection of this important family tradition has somehow caused the death of her beloved Grandfather. Tomasa seeks redemption by making a kite to fly in an indigenous Mayan "Day of the Dead" kite festival, despite a jealous older cousin's efforts at sabotaging her. The film will feature a cast on indigenous Maya actors. The film's themes of tradition, craft and family will have wide appeal to international audiences.

Your donation will help support the cost of filming in remote mountain locations and pay salaries to indigenous actors.. It will also support the cost of producing a free, not-for-profit Mayan Weaving Web Series in Spanish and English that will address the vital support for this threatened art form. All donations $250 or more will receive a "Thanks to" listing in the film's end credits.
