AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage has directed that state flags in Presque Isle be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday in honor of former state Rep. Mary H. MacBride, who died June 5 at the age of 100.

After her husband, Milt, died in 1975, Mary MacBride ran for the Maine House of Representatives from Presque Isle, serving 16 years.

“While serving in the Legislature, she championed any cause she believed would better The County and the district she represented,” according to an obituary published in the BDN. “She was so enthusiastic about her job, she loved discussing all the issues of the day, and it was a great feeling of satisfaction to her to serve the people of Presque Isle, Aroostook County and the State of Maine.”

The daughter of Stetson H. and Gladys G. Hussey, Mary MacBride was born May 11, 1916, in Blaine. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1939.

She was honored in 1973 by Beta Sigma Phi Society as “Lady of the Year”; she was selected by the BDN in 1983 as one of the 10 most outstanding women in northern and eastern Maine; and she also was selected as one of the 12 outstanding women in Aroostook County by the Maine Centers of Women, according to the obituary.

MacBride is survived by a son, a daughter, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the Duncan Graves funeral home in Presque Isle. A private celebration of her life will be held at the gravesite at a later date.
