COMMISSIONERS What's Happening 01/02

Parade of Flags - Opening Ceremony - Jambo 2010

Good Sunday Morning Fellow Commissioner,

The Commissioner Happy New Year!

If you, or some of your unit leaders, are interested in getting training at the National Camping School, I have managed to secure the 2011 Schedule of Classes. I spoke with our Range Directors at La-No-Che, and they said that NCS the best (and least expensive way) to receive your NRA training if you are interested in working at the Ranges.

In addition, the 2011 Schedule of Courses at the Philmont Training Center is also available. This year, the "Commissioner Week" will be during week #2, June 12-18.

With the start of 2011, we also start our goal of getting 6 unit contacts per unit recorded in UVTS! The District-wide Goal is 50%. With our 74 traditional units, that means 37 units need to show 6 or more contacts in UVTS by 12/31/11. We can only do this if each Commissioner logs all their contacts with their units into UVTS, or gives that information to their ADC, so they can add it.

NYLT 2011

NYLTNYLT will be held July 24-29, 2011 at Camp La-No-Che . The course is now open to members of both Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews.

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

NYLT is a six-day course that centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to quickly understand and employ the leadership skills.

NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

The NYLT Registration Form will be out in January.

10 Best Practices For Unit Commissioners

Best Practice No. 10: Have Fun

Any job can become drudgery if you let it. Being a unit commissioner is a tough job, and if you want to be effective, it will take a considerable amount of effort on your part. So don't forget to have fun with it every now and then. Once you have a good relationship with your units, ask if you can visit during a pinewood derby, or during the Klondike derby, or during a district camporee. You're not going to do the job of an ASM or a pack leader, but you can still go and have a good time. Trust me, the first time a unit leader seeks you out for advice or counsel, the smile on your face will suddenly make all that hard work worth it.
