SDMC issues 528 challans, imposes Rs 50,000 fine each

The civic body also carried out a drive in Mahipalpur and removed illegal structures for advertisements.

The building department of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has issued 528 challans for violations and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in each of the instances in compliance with National Green Tribunal orders.

Of the total number of challans, 269 were issued in December, South Delhi mayor Subhash Arya said Friday. “We have fined PWD and Metro as well for unloading construction material on roads, as this material gets mixed with the air. The total recovery is Rs 22.5 lakh till now,” added Arya. He said the Delhi Pollution Control Board and the NGT had been informed about the fines.

In the last three days, the building department acted against 23 properties and undertaken demolition work in areas such as Vasant Kunj, East of Kailash, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Kotla Mubarakpur, Jamia Nagar and others to “curb the rampant, unauthorised construction in these zones”. Three cell towers on different properties were also sealed during this drive, said an official. The offences for which challans were issued include pollution at construction sites, added the official.

The civic body also carried out a drive in Mahipalpur and removed illegal structures for advertisements. Officials said the building department also launched action against unauthorised construction by “unscrupulous builders”. The action was carried out despite resistance from people, said an SDMC spokesperson. The civic body advised the public to get building plan sanctioned from the competent authority. Arya said demolition of unauthorised buildings would continue.
