The new year will bring a shiny new campus to the technology, media arts and business students of Mt. Sierra College. The new 38,000 square-foot location in a technology park on Royal Oaks in Monrovia, will replace the campus’ previous location on Huntington Drive.

The move to the new campus began on December 21, and the new campus will open for classes the first week of January 2016. There are currently 350 students in the school, but according to Herman Whitaker, Senior Director of Admissions, new enrollment initiatives that the school is undertaking should bring the school population up to 600 next year. There are also new program initiatives planned for 2016 and 2017, he added.

“This is a very exciting time,” said Whitaker. “We have a number of articulation agreements with various campuses around the world, and that, along with a host of marketing efforts, should bring our enrollment up,” said Whitaker. Articulation agreements are formal agreements between two or more colleges and universities. documenting the transfer policies for a specific academic program or degree in general.

“We’ve been planning this for some time,” said Mt. Sierra College President William Kakish, who explained that the school had originally planned to build its new location across the street from its previous campus, but various factors, including a change in the Monrovia City Council and a raise in the proposed property’s assessment, they chose the Royal Oaks site.

“This is a beautiful location,” said Kakish. “Our old building was a B class building, and this is an A Class building. The old building had a lot of facility issues.”

Kakish also noted that the new space previously housed a nurses training facility and thus already had classrooms. An additional campus theatre was also built in the new site.

Mt. Sierra College was founded in 1990 and offers majors in Information Technology, Media Arts, including graphics, as well as a Global Business Entrepreneurship program. The school is also located along what has been called the “Gold Line Technology Corridor” with numerous technology and media firms along the east-west Metro Line route from Pasadena, and eventually, to Claremont. The Gold Line’s latest extension will open in March of 2016.

The college also has strong relationships with the local tech companies, Kakish added, saying, “We place a lot of technology graduates locally, throughout the San Gabriel Valley. We are also placing a lot of students in the entertainment industry right after graduation. We are really well suited to the employment needs of Southern California.”

Mt. Sierra College is at 800 Royal Oaks Drive, Monrovia. 888.828.8800. www.mtsierra.edu.
