Nick Feight was selected as the 2016 CAA baseball Player of the Year, while Northeastern junior right-hander
Aaron Civale and UNCW senior right-hander
Ryan Foster shared CAA Pitcher of the Year accolades as the conference announced its post-season award winners on Tuesday.
Other top honors went to Towson freshman second baseman
Richie Palacios as CAA Rookie of the Year, Northeastern senior catcher
Josh Treff as CAA Defensive Player of the Year and UNCW’s
Mark Scalf as CAA Coach of the Year.
Feight posted one of the most impressive seasons offensively of any player in the nation. He batted .362, tied for the league lead with 22 doubles, and topped the conference with 19 home runs and a .763 slugging percentage. The Seahawks’ catcher recorded a school-record 85 RBI’s, a total which is 14 more than any other player in Division I. Feight is tied for second nationally in home runs, third in slugging percentage and 12
th in doubles. He is a semifinalist for the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy, which goes to the top player in the nation. Feight is the fifth Seahawk to receive the Bill Brooks Player of the Year award, and first since 2008.
Civale is the first Northeastern player to receive CAA Pitcher of the Year honors. The Huskies’ right-hander was 8-3 and led the conference with a 1.84 earned run average. He threw a school-record 107.1 innings, recorded a CAA-best 111 strikeouts and issued just 14 walks while limiting opponents to a .224 batting average. Civale ranks seventh in Division I in strikeout-to-walk ratio, 11
th in total strikeouts and 20
th in ERA.
Foster led the nation and tied a school record for wins this season with a sparkling 12-1 record. The Seahawks’ right-hander ranked second in the CAA in ERA (2.41) and innings pitched (97.0) and tied for the CAA lead with two complete games. He held opponents to a .225 batting average. Foster, who is one victory shy of the conference record of 13 wins, is the second UNCW hurler to receive CAA Pitcher of the Year honors, joining Mat Batts (2013 and 2014).
Palacios is Towson’s first CAA Rookie of the Year in baseball. The Tigers’ second baseman batted .329 with six doubles, five triples, six homers and 38 RBI’s. He was tied for third in the CAA with a team-high 55 runs scored. Palacios topped the conference and set a new school record with 32 stolen baes in 41 attempts, a total which ranks ninth in Division I. He was also solid defensively, committing only seven errors in 279 attempts (.975 fielding pct.).
Treff becomes Northeastern’s first CAA Defensive Player of the Year honoree. The senior catcher called pitches for the league’s top-ranked pitching staff, which recorded a 2.87 ERA in conference play. He committed only five errors in more than 430 chances behind the plate and threw out 24 of the 65 base runners who attempted to steal on him. Treff also contributed offensively with 11 doubles, three homers and 22 RBI’s.
Scalf guided UNCW to a 37-15 overall record and its third CAA regular-season title in the past five years with a 16-6 mark. The Seahawks were among national leaders in numerous offensive categories and posted a 29-3 record at home. Scalf, who is the winningest coach in UNCW history with more than 800 career victories, earned his seventh CAA Coach of the Year award, which is the most in conference history.
UNCW placed a league-high five players on the All-CAA first team. Feight and Foster were joined by sophomore second baseman
Brian Mims (.369, 13 HR, 53 RBI’s), junior third baseman Daniel Stack (.286, 10 HR, 38 RBI’s) and senior outfielder
Steven Linkous (.384, 70 R, 40 RBI’s 29 SB). Elon had four first-team honorees with senior first baseman
Tyler McVicar (.326, 9 HR, 46 RBI’s), junior utility player
Nick Zammarelli (.332, 8 HR, 48 RBI’s), junior designated hitter
CJ Young (.302, 1 HR, 27 RBI’s) and junior relief pitcher
Chris Hall (2-2, 10 saves, 3.07 ERA).
Rounding out the first team were Northeastern’s Civale, Towson junior shortstop
Brady Policelli (.375, 9 HR, 45 RBI’s), Delaware junior outfielder
Jordan Glover (.360, 52 RBI’s, 22 SB) and James Madison junior outfielder
Ky Parrott (.319, 29 RBI’s, 57 BB).
The 2016 CAA Baseball Championship gets underway on Wednesday from The Ballpark at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Six teams will battle for the league title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
