Why this petition matters
Utah lawmakers are facing the decision whether to increase access to affordable health insurance to those who earn too little to receive help on the health insurance Marketplace, yet earn too much or otherwise don’t qualify for Medicaid.
An estimated 57,000 Utahns fall into this coverage gap—who are at risk for losing their job, their personal savings, and their home if they get hurt or sick.
The good news is that this year, Utah lawmakers have the chance to make a positive change.
Governor Herbert has proposed a plan to extend health insurance to over 111,000 low-income adults who currently don’t qualify for Medicaid. His Healthy Utah plan would bring taxpayer dollars back to the state and put them to work for low-income Utahns. Governor Herbert’s plan encourages and supports those who are working, but also offers a safety net for those who are medically frail.
In addition to the human toll that is caused by tens of thousands of Utahns remaining uninsured, Utah’s inaction has caused a significant financial toll to the state. Since January 1, 2014, Utah has lost $796,789 per day that would provide coverage to those Utahns who need it most, and will continue to lose that money the longer we wait.
