A corrections officer who has worked at Stillwater prison for more than 20 years was found with a cache of drugs and drug paraphernalia by a Wisconsin state trooper last weekend while his car was stopped on Interstate 90/94, authorities said.

Randy S. Anderson, 52, of Stillwater, made his first appearance Monday in Juneau County District Court in Wisconsin after spending the weekend in jail, and was released after posting a $10,000 bond. Anderson faces three drug charges: possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of THC (the ingredient in marijuana that makes it illegal) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges carry prison terms totaling more than 40 years. But Anderson, a lieutenant who began his career in 1991, also could face further discipline from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, which has its own Office of Special Investigations. The OSI investigates any criminal matters involving inmates, visitors or department staff members.

John Schadl, spokesman for the department, could not comment specifically on Anderson's case because it is a personnel matter. "These are certainly some very serious charges, and this is something we'll be cooperating with authorities on," he said.

According to the criminal complaint:

A state trooper on Saturday stopped to investigate a car parked along the westbound interstate lanes about 10 miles west of Wisconsin Dells, Wis. As the trooper looked in the car, he saw in plain sight a type of marijuana-smoking pipe known as a "one-hitter."

As he looked further, the trooper saw a black duffel bag which smelled of marijuana. Inside the bag, he found 82 grams (about 3 ounces) of cocaine, a plastic bag holding nearly 8 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and a glass pipe of the type used to smoke crack cocaine and methamphetamine. On the passenger-side floor of the car was a cigarette pack containing a red straw with white powdery residue.

Anderson was arrested and his car was impounded so a more thorough search could be made.
