Can anyone please confirm with me if this is working on the HTC Desire?

I've been looking around and asking if this was possible and it is thank god!

I'm using the "Official Sense ROM" by "AdamG" if that helps.

I would most definitely buy it just don't want to buy it and then find out it's not working. Then having to refund it.

If anyone could get back to me it'd be great, thanks!

And great work "appelflap". I'm sure a lot of people been looking for something like this, I know I have. Never thought it'd be possible through an app though. :D

Working wonderfully on my EVO, but is there any way to get the non-scaling apps to fit? I enabled the compatibility mode, but certain apps (like Engadget and the LCD Density Changer app itself) don't scale at all and just leave a big black box around them. Any soulution to this would be incredible.

To bad for the Desire :( but i bought it anyway from Market:p (i still hope that a "master" found a way to fully root our Desire).
I change setting manualy in the "build.prop" and it's fantastic now :D.
Thanks a lot to bring us this tweak ;)

The text in the first post is not linked to any download and in Market I can't find the app...

Ok, if you have a USB Debugging connection open here's a get-me-out of this:

1. First copy the attached update.zip to the directory where adb resides
2. Enter in a command window: adb push update.zip /sdcard
3. After that go into recovery mode by entering adb recovery or push volume up-power button-home button simultaneously.
4 wait for the recovery screen and choose "apply update.zip"

Hope this helps. I will put a upper limit on the density value that can be entered.

If it doesn't work there's a official Froyo version out for the SGS i9000. If you install that one the system is resetted to default.

Thank you :) I'll try figure out how to use adb. I couldn't find out how to use it last time I tried. But the official Froyo release, where can I get that? At Samsung Firmwares?

Hi Peden, I tested a 300 density setting on my Galaxy S and I didn't get into trouble at all. And if you got into trouble I wonder why the boot-monitor didn't get you out of the situation.
Can you describe more exactly what you did? Did you pull the battery out directly after setting the density value or something like that?

Edit: I tested different scenarios and 300 is a very bad idea. Never accept a value in the boot monitor with that setting, although it looks alright. I will set the upper limit to 240 for safety. Contact me by PM if you want me to assist you with adb, froyo etc.

Strange :S I just started the program, set the value to 300 and rebooted the phone. Nothing else. Do I have to take the battery out or?

It's not working correctly for me. I set my density to 200, grant superuser, and the phone doesnt restart. I'm using the market version because I'm not cheap and want the developer to keep developing this app.

Sometimes you have to set the density again after granting the app a permission. Try that. (after the app has permission it will reboot immediately after hitting the change button)

just an update, it is not working for my hd2 on android..

ahhh a HD2 user. Hi there :) former colegue. Maybe you can post the build.prop from the system directory so I can look into it.

As far as I can see now there seems to be three situations in which the app doesn't work:

1. there is no ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx entry in the build.prop inside the system directory. To solve this you can add the entry yourself. (Take for xxx the default density value you see in the LCD Density Changer screen). After this you can use the Density Changer without any problems. I advice to use it instead of manually rebooting because the boot monitor can take you out of very unpleasant situations

2. The rooting method of a particular device didn't create a full r/w access to the /system directory. This is why the app doesn't work on the HTC Desire.

3. As explained by fards earlier in this thread. Some (at least one that I know of) devices ignore the ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx entry in the build.prop file. Like for example the dell streak.

Love the app, however, it makes ADW Launcher lag horribly on my Evo. Running CM6 stable release, stock kernel. It smoothes out when i set it back to 240, compatibility mode does not help. Any ideas?

    For rooted devices only

Update (Oct 20): Fixed a bug with busybox in the full version. This bug could cause booting problems because of a damaged build.prop file. Should be totally safe now when saving the density to the boot up density of the device..
(Lite version, see attachment, doesn't save the density setting and is therefore safe by definition)

App to change the density setting of the screen.

In short, by decreasing the density the display will create a high resolution effect by displaying more info on the screen. For example, with a density of 180 I get this on my Galaxy S screen:

    density4.png
    or
    density2.png

There is a extensive help file "on board" with some (important) info.

    Free version
Is also a lite version and fully sponsored by adds. The lite version only makes it possible to temporarily change a density setting. This setting will be undone when you reboot the phone. It uses "hot reboots" and no "cold reboots". It doesn't rely on the build.prop density parameter. Should in principle work on all devices. The free version is attached to this post

    Full version
Full version (no adds + with the possibility to save the density and/or write it to the build.prop + desktop widgets for fast loading temporarily saved density setting) can be bought from from the Android Market (0.75 Euro). Search for "LCD Densitiy Changer" or scan:

Yeah, not shocking, but it is what is under the hood that makes it worthwhile

    Tips
tip1: If the dialer doesn't scale well with other density settings try dialer one
tip2: It seems that ADW Launcher can get the most out of a density change. By changing the amount of colums and/or rows of the desktop one has a better control how icons and widgets will display. Also a smaller density will allow you to add more icons to the desktop without any clutter or overlap.
tip 3: Devices that run a default default density of 240 (Nexus, Droid, Galaxy S etc), a density of 200 gives the best result. It's the best compromise of having more info on the screen and readability of that info.
tip 4: Beautiful widget center problem: see here for a possible workaround.

Link to "app-site" with some additional tips, tricks, help and some frequently asked questions: http://densitychanger.blogspot.com/

Any other tips about getting the most out of this great "Density tweak" are very much appreciated. I will add them to the first post and, if possible, I will incorporate them in my app.

    Note for developers
To make your app support all density values (and don't have any scaling problems, even when compatibility mode is on!), select SDK Version 4 as your minimal target and add the following to your AndroidManifest.xml file:

    Code:
    <supports-screens
              android:largeScreens="true"
              android:normalScreens="true"
              android:smallScreens="true"
              android:anyDensity="true" />

    -----------------------------------

Thanks to xda-member jdsemler who discovered this density tweak on his Samsung Captivate.
bratfink for giving some very useful input
Cutefox for noticing that deactivating the compatibility mode solves the scaling problem (in most cases).

I cant seem to find the free one. Would love to give it a testrun.

Same. I can't seem to find the Free version of this as said in the first post so I can give this a try and see if it works well on my phone before buying it.

Anyone have a link to the download?

I have tried on my nexus one with modaco froyo on it.

It work very well on most of the apps; When you have a list of information (like gmail, sms, setting, post on Facebook, etc ) is perfect, in other case the program looks a little weird.
Some app don't take the whole screen (Setting of Digital clock widget) and in other cases the graphics looks a little to small (dialer and Kit auto).

It would be great to have the text in the list smaller to see more information without the problem on other application.

I hope that i explain myself well! :D

    Great app!
