Rate this book
Widely acclaimed and cited by practitioners and scholars alike as the definitive book on cybersecurity leadership and governance. "The book defines cybersecurity ... It also continues to expand on the three key tenets of people, policy and technology. Hasib does well at describing such complex topics as the seven essential functions of a CIO, the challenges that occur when organizations place the CIO as a direct report to the CFO, and why the CIO and CISO must have a mutually supportive relationship. ..." - - excerpt from review by DaMon Ross.

"Dr. Mansur Hasib brings an executive MBA to technology professionals in one book in Cybersecurity Leadership: Powering the Modern Organization. It is a significant reference book for leadership in any organization; however, it specifically addresses the challenges unique to technology and cybersecurity. The book provides a business-level understanding of cybersecurity and critical leadership principles for interdisciplinary organizational leaders and technology professionals. ..." - excerpt from review by Dawn-Marie Hutchinson.

"Every sitting and aspiring CIO and CISO should read this book. As I read the book, I had frequent flashbacks to my past experiences as the FBI CIO and as a Wall Street executive. "Cybersecurity Leadership" is a holistic approach and roadmap for leaders to ponder and to follow as they strive to build a world class organization and an effective cyber program. Most of the lessons parallel what I've done in practice while others stimulate and almost mandate a lively conversation." - Chad Fulgham, Former CIO, FBI and one of the most respected global thought leaders.

"Mansur has a unique perspective since he has served as a CIO. If you are a newly appointed CIO/CISO, or if you are looking for those jobs, this is a book worth reading. It is well researched, a lot of personal experience and is a pretty quick read at 165 pages .." - Stephen Northcutt, Director Academic Programs, SANS Institute.

"... not just a book, but a go to manual on how to lead in the 21st century. From his model for CEO to his intuitive insights on electronic medium in healthcare is on target. If you are looking for answers to fundamental questions on management, leadership and ethics, this book is a must read. Thank you for sharing your years of experience with us." - Wayne Richards - Former graduate student.

"Mansur Hasib is the 'Peter Drucker" of Cyber Security .." - Todd Bell, CISO, Board Advisor, International Cybersecurity Expert.

"I've had the pleasure of taking Dr. Hasib's class and learning about both Cybersecurity Management and Ethical Leadership. In an ever changing field, there are certain principles that we can apply consistently. Dr. Hasib covers these principles and does it in a way that (is) easy to learn and understand .." - B. Avery Greene - Former graduate student.

"..The dynamic of his classroom was so different than any class I've had. He is paving the way for future CEO's CISO's and entrepreneurs and is making a direct positive impact for cybersecurity students. Even though my background is not very technical, I was able to fully comprehend and excel in his classroom .. " -Sarah Purdum - Former graduate student.

"...explains what an organization needs to know to implement cybersecurity governance." Council of Graduate Schools Testimony at the US Senate Appropriations Committee Meeting, April 29, 2014.

"...this book will change both the way we think about leadership and the way we understand information technology. I recommend this book highly to everyone." - Eric Schwartz - Executive Director at Advena World LLC.

An audiobook that must be listened to more than once.
Dr. Hasib’s insights into cybersecurity and leadership are of great value to students and business leaders alike. Throughout the book he deconstructs personal experiences that can be applied to those just starting out in the business world, those who are further along in their career and looking to advance, and even the ones looking to give back through mentorship. The importance of how everyone in an organization is a member of the cybersecurity team is a point that cannot be stressed enough. Hasib’s diverse background even allows for those without a technical background to easily follow along and benefit from his wisdom. He shares his knowledge as a gift that everyone is worthy of accepting, and it shows through every chapter.

CyberSecurity Leadership by Mansur Hasib overviews the efforts that technological analysts use in order to keep cyberspace secure. The book overviews various types of leadership roles analysts have to use in order to attain a secure role in leading the technical world. Teamwork and leadership is the main key Hasib highlights, including the need for ethics, confidentiality, transparency, collaboration, and empowerment. Strategically, collaborating takes certain concepts including security and building management systems. He actually calls for strict governance and researching data compliance. He also overviews job roles, such as Chief Information Officer (CIO). Overall, I think this book is good for people who want to be CIOs.

Cybersecurity leadership goes beyond securing the technology that supports a business. This book touches on its role in ensuring long term business sustainability. As we move towards working offsite , working on personal devices , the world of personal and workplace becomes merged. This opens up risk of theft of intellectual property, unauthorized access to business networks and so on. Cybersecurity involves securing a business’s people, their technology and processes therefore a Cybersecurity strategy should be part of the business strategy and should be the responsibility of all people in the organization.

Don't bother. There are much better books on leadership out there and there are much better books on Cybersecurity out there. Combining both subjects into one does not make a good book.

I had high expectations from this book but it flatters to deceive. The author comes from a background more closer to IT than Security Engineering. This is quite evident in the lack of technical discussions in the book. Overall, the book is light on what specifically a cybersecurity leader in a CISO/CIO role should actually do. The content is a mix of fluff, common sense or information you can find in any blogpost.

Well written book with good content and interesting stories. The author ‘s long experience shows but the book is very general. At times there were a lot of citations that I felt weren’t necessary and felt like common sense. Instead of these short citations, I would have liked short explanations of the research that backed up those statements. I would also have liked professional narration better.

Interesting book with some good concepts. Some chapters have a heavy digression outside the realm of cybersecurity, but it's still a decent read.

Lots of information but not sure if it’s specified enough. I expected more information about being a CISO and this was more oriented towards cios.

More of a CIO/CISO guide than a book on leadership and/or leadership specific to/within cybersecurity.

Disclaimer: I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway on the premise that I would review it.

Mansur Hasib has been a Chief Information Officer in the healthcare and biotechnology fields for a dozen years. His special expertise is in cybersecurity. Most of the essays in this book come from his blog with some editing.

Cybersecurity and leadership are only two of the subjects covered in this book; it ranges over several areas of IT and corporate culture. A particularly interesting topic is how electronic records and compliance with the Affordable Care Act are affecting healthcare organizations from an IT standpoint. There’s a lot of good information in bits and pieces throughout, and the essay format allows a quick read of relevant material.

Overall, the book is poorly organized; the essays could have done with more editing and perhaps some consolidation to reduce redundancy. There are several takes on why a CIO should be a direct report to the CEO rather than the CFO, for example. There’s a lot of jargon that will tend to make the prose opaque to the layperson. There’s a list of references at the end, but no index.

I cannot recommend the paperback edition because it’s $30.00 for 175 pages, yet has several proofreader typos. It could be slightly less expensive without color printing, since the color illustrations add little. I’d recommend the ebook for cabinet level corporate executives and those planning to reach that position, particularly in the IT field.

This is the revised 3rd edition published mid-September 2015. The book covers people and leadership aspects of cybersecurity. This is a corporate governance and cybersecurity leadership book and not a book on technology or cybersecurity. The book is available in ebook, paperback, and audio formats. Choose the format best suited to your method of acquiring knowledge.

No prior technical or cybersecurity knowledge required.

Thanks to wide global adoption as the definitive book on cybersecurity leadership and governance, the book is among the best selling cybersecurity books of all time: https://bookauthority.org/books/best-...

This book has some good parts, and the author sounds like a really interesting person/professional. However, I felt that overall it was not well organized nor did it maintain a consistent focus on cyber security. I think the author would have been better off publishing a much more concise but better organized book concentrating entirely on cyber security, and then breaking off significant chucks of his current work to help construct a second book on the modern opportunities, practices, and potential of information technology.
