The beautiful artwork of local artists Evelyn and Andrea Vian is on display this month.

Did You

Know?

Margaret and H.A. Rey built bicycles from spare parts to escape from a Nazi invasion in Paris while carrying the manuscript for Curious George.

A Celina native, Thomas J. Godfrey, was president of the Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University for seven years beginning in 1878.

The world´s largest fine for an overdue library book is $345.14. Although the book was due back April 19, 1955, the woman found it in her mother´s house 47 years later and presented the library with a check for overdue fines.

The first library in Celina was built in 1907. A woman named Miss Myrtle Crockett was the first librarian.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar was almost called A Week With Willi Worm.

In order to clear the land when Celina was founded in the late 19th century, a chopping bee was held. It included a dance, a feast, and two barrels of whiskey.

Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

In some parts of the world, it is customary to make three wishes for the New Year. In that spirit, I wanted to share my three wishes for the Mercer County District Library.

The first wish I have is to get more people into the library. Jeff Tomlinson, director of the Lee-Itawamba Library System, said it best when he explained that everybody is a member of the library--"they just haven't come in to get their library card yet." The good news is, most of the people in area have come in to get their library cards. There are approximately 10,400 people living in Celina and at the main library we have 8,581 registered patrons above the age of six. That’s a great number. Still, it is my wish that we see all 10,400 Celina residents walk in our doors throughout the coming year.

My second wish is to see more Friends of the Library. The Friends of the Library group is responsible for our popular Lake Festival Book Sale and the bookstore next door to the library.  The group also sponsors author programs each fall, which serve as excellent opportunities for authors to connect with local readers. The Friends of the Library meet several times a year to discuss event ideas and current projects. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, contact Jean Shaw by emailing Jean@MercerLibrary.org or by calling the library at 419-586-4442.

My third wish is to embrace art in the library. Literature and art travel hand in hand through the world, and I would like to mirror that relationship with a strong collaboration between our library and local artists. It would be wonderful if people could come to our library, where they are exposed to beautiful and thought-provoking prose, to see an equally beautiful and thought-provoking work of art. Towards that end, we have partnered with the newly formed Lake Area Arts Group to display the work of local artists. We also display high school students’ art in the Teen Zone. So this year, my wish is to strengthen the library’s reputation as a place for the free exchange of ideas by including visual works of art. I would like to expand this collaboration not just at our main library, but at all of our branch libraries and the other libraries in the county as well.

I am excited and privileged to be serving our community as the Director of the Mercer County District Library, and look forward seeing each of you come in to utilize all our library has to offer you.  Whether that be for books, technology, events, the mineral collection, or the arts, we are here for you.  As always, if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions, please share those as well.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Muether, MLIS
Director
