News Corporation outlined plans last night to launch its own social network as well as an instant messaging service for financial clients.

The Wall Street Journal is expected to launch a social network in the coming months that will compete with LinkedIn as a platform for “like-minded people” to meet online and share ideas.

News Corp also intends to offer new Dow Jones services, including a personal messaging system that will challenge some of Bloomberg’s existing products. These ventures were revealed last night as the media group, the parent company of The Times, outlined its future strategy to investors in New York.

News Corp will split next month, with the company’s entertainment assets — which include Fox Television and Fox News — being spun
