An 8-month-old girl, who was seriously injured in a Sunday night house fire, is likely alive today thanks to the love of a family dog, according to reports.

WBAL-TV reported the baby's mother, Erika Poremski, walked out of her two-story Baltimore home Sunday night to run to her car. When she looked back, she saw her house was in flames with her sleeping daughter inside.

Due to the heavy smoke and flame, Poremski couldn't get inside to save her daughter who was trapped on the second floor.

"I just heard her crying and i couldn't get to her," she told the news station. "I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn't (get her out). Nobody could."

Poremski suffered burns to her hands and face trying to save her daughter, Viviana.

When firefighters got the fire under control about 30 minutes later, they found the family's dog, Polo, in the girl's room and covering her with his body.

"She only had burns on her side because of it," Poremski said. "He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn't even come downstairs to get out the door."

Viviana was revived at the scene, but she suffered burns to her face, arm and side. Polo died at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
