In a controversial new book the Church of Scientology has slammed as “replete with lies”, author Andrew Morton claims Tom Cruise attempted to win the heart of Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner.

The actor pursued the Alias star, who is now married to Ben Affleck, before his high profile romance with Katie Holmes began, according to Morton's controversial release Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography.

Morton alleges that after the star split from Penelope Cruz in 2004, he left a number of messages on Garner's voicemail asking - rather obscurely - "if she knew what freedom was."

According to other reports in the US, the actor also attempted to win her over by sending her a real Bengal tiger - her favorite animal.

But his mission proved impossible, with the actress allegedly refusing his advances.

The author also claims Holmes agreed to a £1.5 million pre-nup and signed a document prior to her marriage that allowed "Scientologists full control over her life".

The Church of Scientology told American magazine Us Weekly: "Ms Holmes never signed any agreement."

The Church also issued a 15-page statement on Morton's book, calling it "a bigoted, defamatory assault."
