Tara Maya has lived in Africa, Europe and Asia. She's pounded sorghum with mortar and pestle in a little clay village where the jungle meets the desert, meditated in a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and sailed the Volga river to a secret city that was once the heart of the Soviet space program. This first-hand experience, as well as research into the strange and piquant histories of lost civilizations, inspires her writing. Her terrible housekeeping, however, is entirely the fault of pixies. ...more

Tara Maya shared a quote
Web of the Spider Queen by John Grover
“She was a self-proclaimed queen, with the blackest of hearts and the coldest of gazes. Her fierce eyes were filled with the wild. Tall in stature, she possessed a commanding presence. What monsters she couldn’t find in this world, she summoned through sinister magic. A necromancer and invoker from the shadows of the abyss, she ripped her way into Orum a millennium ago with one purpose: rule this world or destroy it. Her name: Sinnia, the Spider Queen.”
John Grover

Web of the Spider Queen by John Grover
“The horror multiplied as they watched the dark soldiers herd their steeds—enormous spiders as large as horses. The arachnids’ bulbous bodies were midnight-black, and coarse hair sprouted over every inch, including eight legs of deadly strength, strong enough to crush a tree trunk. The warriors used these hideous beasts to ride into battle, and in their army, as soldiers who spit poison and spun webs of death. These abominations were pets of the leader of this great, dark army that threatened to enslave the once peaceful, lush world of Orum.”

Tara Maya shared a quote
Shadow Wizard by Jeffe Kennedy
“Instead, he whistled idly as the wizard and his miserable human caboose led him to a parlor done entirely in black on black. Really with this color scheme? Jadren liked black just fine, particularly in formal wear and lingerie on beautiful women, but this was too much. He was going to start referring to Sammael as House Over the Top.”

“The purring kitten on her shoulder and the beauty of the day rinsed away her gloom on the walk home.”
Tara Maya, Faery Worlds: Six First-in-Series Urban Fantasy Novels

“Don’t you understand? This is your chance to escape who you are, become who you want.”
Tara Maya, Initiate

“Far, far better to die. One by one the rest of the Zavaedis came to cast their stones for either exoneration, exile, or death. Some spoke to the assembly of their reasons why, others simply placed the stone according to their choice. Unfortunately, his mother’s plea moved many people to pity him. When all the rocks had piled up, the orange mat held the most stones. Exile. Kavio swallowed hard to conceal his reaction. You have murdered me all the same. Father pounded the rain stick. “Kavio, you have been found guilty of the most heinous of crimes—hexcraft. Though you remain a member of the secret societies that initiated you and are therefore spared death, nonetheless you are forbidden to enter the Labyrinth, to take with you anything from the Labyrinth, or to study with any dancing society of the Labyrinth. Do you understand and acknowledge your punishment?” “I understand it all too well,” Kavio said through gritted teeth. “But I will never acknowledge it as just.” “So be it,” Father said tonelessly. “Bring the pot of ashes.” Two warriors hefted a ceramic pot from where it had rested in the shadow of the tall platform. They forced Kavio to lean back while still on his knees. They smeared him with a paste and rubbed in the gray-black powder. His bare chest and clean shaven face disappeared under a scum of grey crud. Humiliation itched, but like poison ivy, he knew it would be worse if he scratched it. He forced himself still as stone while the warriors slapped on more mud. “You must wear mud and ash for the rest of your days,” the Maze Zavaedi concluded. His voice broke. “I am ashamed to call you my son.” Kavio struggled to his feet. The warriors escorting him surrounded him with a hedge of spears. Did they fear him, even now? “You never could just trust me, could you, Father?” Kavio asked. Father’s jaw jutted forward. A muscle moved in his neck. Otherwise, he might have been rock. “Escort my son out of the Labyrinth.”

“We need not only to rescue ourselves from the seemingly unrelenting march of a rapidly growing army of scientific disciplines that are threatening to bury us in an abundance of disparate, abstractly disconnected, to us often irrelevant, and therefore meaningless facts. We appear also to need to attempt to rescue the experts from their seemingly unimpeded gravitation into the realm of near-complete detachment. Should we fail in our work to bring them down to earth, we may ourselves fall victim to their increasingly incomprehensible and elaborate calculations and terminological abstractions. We will be left as aliens in a world of our own creation.”
C. Odell Smith, The Naked Australopiths: Potential Culturally Generated Contributions to Hair Loss in Australopithecus and/or the Habilines at the Dawn of the Paleolithic ... of Non-Genetic Artificial Selection Book 1)

“Artificial speciation is the process whereby distinct breeds of humans are artificially created out of the same human stock.”
C. Odell Smith, The Naked Australopiths: Potential Culturally Generated Contributions to Hair Loss in Australopithecus and/or the Habilines at the Dawn of the Paleolithic ... of Non-Genetic Artificial Selection Book 1)

“There is a reason that people seem to be especially concerned today about the question of the presumed audience at whom a particular writer is directing her or his writing. At least part of that reason is that, through the process of artificial speciation, humans have been increasingly divided into very different categories of audiences composed of different species of qualified experts and differently educated and uneducated others of many varieties.”
C. Odell Smith, The Naked Australopiths: Potential Culturally Generated Contributions to Hair Loss in Australopithecus and/or the Habilines at the Dawn of the Paleolithic ... of Non-Genetic Artificial Selection Book 1)

“It was more than dignity. Integrity? Wholeness? Like a block of wood not carved. The infinite possibility, the unlimited and unqualified wholeness of being of the uncommitted, the nonacting, the uncarved: the being who, being nothing but himself, is everything.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Lathe of Heaven

“He never spoke with any bitterness at all, no matter how awful the things he said. Are there really people without resentment, without hate? she wondered. People who never go cross-grained to the universe? Who recognize evil, and resist evil, and yet are utterly unaffected by it?”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Lathe of Heaven
