New York City nabbed the best tasting tap water title in a July 28 competition.
NEW YORK CITY — The results are in and people are gushing over New York City tap water.
The city’s tap water nabbed the top prize in New York State’s Regional Metro Tap Water Taste Test competition Thursday, the Department of Environmental Protection said.
Visitors to the American Museum of Natural History, where the competition was held, got to swish and gargle tap water from five New York regions and rank them by taste. New York City’s water was up against Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk and Orange counties.
Regional title in hand, New York City’s tap water will compete in a state-wide competition on Sept. 2.
“Generations ago New Yorkers had the foresight to construct the incredible network of infrastructure that carries our water from as far away as 125 miles and provides us with a robust supply of high-quality drinking water from a pristine and protected watershed,” said DEP Acting Commissioner Vincent Sapienza. “Under Mayor de Blasio’s leadership we have continued that tradition, investing billions of dollars in upgrades to our water supply system and watershed protection programs, to ensure that the next generation of New Yorkers continue to enjoy high quality drinking water.”
The City took home the state title in 2008, besting 150 other municipal water systems. The Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked New Yorkers to raise a glass to congratulate the DEP at the time.
“For New York City residents and our visitors, the choice between bottled water and tap water is as easy as choosing between a frozen pizza and a slice from a New York pizzeria.”
