CELEBRATING THE NEWBERY AND BEYOND

In this course, teachers will experience what it is like to be on the American Library Association (ALA) Newbery Committee and be able to run a "mock Newbery" course in your own classroom.

First awarded in 1921, the John Newbery Award is given annually to the author of the "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." We will discuss what makes a book distinguished in all of the criteria the current ALA Newbery Committee is using to make their selections for the 2017 awards. This year the Newbery announcement will be made on Monday, January 23, 2017.

We will read, analyze, critique and discuss some of the most talked about middle grade books published in 2016. All lessons and activities could easily be replicated with students, most specifically those in Grades 4-8. How to align a Newbery project with Common Core Learning Standards and 21st century skills, integrate it with school assignments, include it as small book group selections and more will be covered. Other ALA Youth Media Awards will also be discussed such as Caldecott, Geisel, Sibert and Coretta Scott King. Participants should be prepared to read at least 3-5 2017 Newbery hopeful books throughout the course.

Some Newbery contending titles we will be discussing: Maybe a Fox (Appelt and McGhee), Paper Wishes (Lois Sepahban), Pax (Sara Pennypacker), Raymie Nightingale (Kate DiCamillo), Samurai Rising (Pamela S. Turner), Towers Falling (Jewell Parker Rhodes) The Wild Robot (Peter Brown), Wolf Hollow (Lauren Wolk) and more!

(NOTE: Former students can still enroll! We will be discussing all new books and learning new skills!)
