BALASORE: India on Tuesday successfully flight tested the nuke-capable surface-to-surface Dhanush ballistic missile from a naval warship in the Bay of Bengal. The trial termed as 'trainer exercise' was conducted around 11.30am.
Defence sources said the missile was test-fired from the warship 'INS Subhadra', which anchored about 35 km off the Puri coast during its final operational configuration.
Another warship, INS Rajput, provided all essential support for the test.
"All operations for the launch were carried out by the Navy. It met all the mission objectives. All the events occurred as expected and monitored by the range sensors. It was a textbook launch and a fantastic mission accomplished," claimed a defence official.
The test launch was tracked from its take-off to impact point through an integrated network of sophisticated radars and electro-optic instruments for data analysis. The trial was conducted two days after the DRDO conducted a mock trial of indigenously-developed AAD interceptor missile from a test range off the Odisha coast.
Dhanush, a naval variant of India's indigenously-developed Prithvi missile, has a strike range up to 350 km and can carry single warhead, conventional or nuclear up to 500 kg. This single stage missile uses liquid propellant. It can be used as an anti-ship weapon as well as for destroying land targets depending on the range.
Developed by the DRDO under its ambitious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, the missile is about 8.53 metre in length and 0.9 metre in diameter with a launch weight of 4.4 tonnes.

"During the Tuesday's test aimed at studying the control and guidance system of the missile and its other parameters, besides providing training to the user, the missile maintained its intended trajectory before dropping into the sea," he informed.
The ministry of defence had made elaborate preparations for the test. A cautionary notice was issued to aviators and mariners to keep away from the area of splashdown in the Bay of Bengal. Senior navy officials and DRDO bigwigs were on-board during the mission.
