From the corner of your local Starbeans to the stage at Planet Hollywood

If your hunger for virtual stardom hasn't yet been sated by games like Kim Kardashian: Hollywood and Katy Perry Pop, you're in luck. Britney Spears: American Dream, the latest celebrity-casual game from mobile giant Glu, is being released worldwide today. The game is being made available for iOS and Android just over a year after Glu announced its partnership with Spears, an agreement that's set to last until at least 2020. If you've somehow never spent any time with one of Glu's celebrity-stamped, energy-based journeys to stardom, American Dream will make a fine introduction to the formula; if you've played either of the games mentioned above (or their cousin Kendall & Kylie), you'll know exactly what you're getting into.

You start the game on stage with Spears herself

At the very least, you have to give American Dream for mixing up the standard Glu introductory sequence. Instead of stumbling into Kim Kardashian at your dreadful retail gig or performing for Perry in a crowded coffeehouse, you start the game in medias res: you're standing on the Planet Hollywood stage alongside Spears, the master version of "Oops!...I Did It Again" blasting from the speakers. She invites you to remember the day you met in Los Angeles, a joyous afternoon you started stocking CDs while enjoying instrumental versions of hits like "Piece of Me" and "Toxic." When a friend tells you Spears has appeared in the Starbeans outlet across the street — yes, Starbeans — you rush over and... perform for Spears in a crowded coffeehouse. She invites you to a party later that night, you change into a crisp white button-down, and the rest is history provided you spend enough time (and money) tapping your way to stardom.

American Dream may not be reinventing the wheel, but it doesn't need to. It just needs to pull in a chunk of the people who love Spears' music and irreverent Instagram presence and occupy their free time: their bathroom breaks, their morning commutes, the minutes they spend lying in bed before falling asleep. With a library full of her music and inspirational dialogue — yes, you can hear Spears praise you and congratulate you on a new hit single — American Dream has just enough personality to justify its addition to the Glu library.

More celebrity games are on the way

And if the idea of spending time in Spears' virtual playground doesn't appeal to you, rest assured Glu has more games on the way. "We've announced a number of partnerships with high-profile celebrities whose titles are all currently in development," said Glu chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi in an email to The Verge. "A game featuring Gordon Ramsay, our first celebrity chef partnership, is slated to launch this summer. We're also hard at work developing original titles featuring Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift."

"I'm a creative person by nature, and... now I get to flex my creative muscles in a whole new way," said Spears in a statement. "I'm so excited to share this project with my fans. Mobile gaming is something completely new for me and I can't wait to hear what my fans think of all the fun music, outfits, pets, and artwork. I hope they adore it as much as I do!"
