Monrovia Girls Soccer Loses At Pasadena

Wildcats get overmatched by Bulldogs, fall to 0-2

The Monrovia girls soccer team lost a one-sided affair on the road at Pasadena by a score of 5-0 on Tuesday.

The Wildcats trailed 3-0 at the half and didn't fare much better in the second half as they couldn't muster much offense and gave up two more goals to lose 5-0.

"We're looking to play teams that are better than us as they expose us so we can get better for league," Monrovia coach Jamie Payne said. "None of these games really count to us until we get to league in January. We have a lot of things to work on after today's game."

The Wildcats lost many players to graduation and are trying to find an identity early on in this young season. Their outstanding goalkeeper Sara Wallick from last year graduated and left a big hole in the net for them to replace. The exposure to well organized and talented teams like Pasadena will only help this young Wildcat team later in the season.

"A lot needs to be corrected and we have a lot of time to fix things," Payne said. "That is what preseason is for."

Payne will rely on one of her senior captains, midfielder Riley Ward to provide leadership and experience to help the younger players during the season.

"Riley Ward is a senior captain, four year varsity player and two year captain who can provide leadership," Payne said. "Hopefully with her leadership they'll get it fixed."

After losing so many starters and key contributors from last season, this Wildcat team is a work in progress. Monrovia has only four players from last year and has seven new starters.

Monrovia's next game will be a home game against Ramona Convent on Saturday. The Wildcats and their coach are looking forward to playing back at home, since it has been a long while since they have hosted a soccer game at home.

"This will be our first home game in nearly two years we are looking forward to playing at home," Payne said. "Playing at home is nice; we've been traveling for almost two years now."
