What a wonderful early morning trip in the Louisiana wetlands! Along with several of my photography friends, Capt. Wendy guided us through the bayous and marshes in her comfortable boat. As she stopped along the way for us to photograph the beauty of the landscape, shrimp boats, and wildlife, she explained the plight of the disappearing wetlands. She is very knowledgeable of the area and is an outstanding spokeswoman for saving the natural habitat. After our tour, she showed us her lodge on the bayou that is available for rent. Our next trip is going to be an overnighter. We may stretch ourselves and do some fishing also. Capt. Wendy is a delight to work with and became a friend immediately. If you want to take a bayou trip and venture into the marshes and swamps of So. Louisiana, this is the trip for you. She also has a radio talk show and website bayouwoman.com.

The best tour guides are not chauffeurs who tell amusing stories. They are unimpeachable scholars and advocates who, through education, infect their charges with some of their own passion. And so it is for Captain Wendy, a truly gifted woman who knows the bayou, the tremendous value Louisiana wetlands provide to our entire country and how close these treasures are to extinction. A tour with her is not an alligator photo-op (although you get that too). You begin with a presentation that defines the vocabulary (do you know the difference between a swamp and a marsh...a bayou and a canal), the fragility of salt and fresh water life and how the Wetlands are threatened by manmade indifference. The tour is conducted from her shallow draft boat in comfort with narrative that illuminates and educates. The 3-4 hours fly but no so fast that you miss the compelling nature of the trip and its narrator. DO.NOT.MISS! (about an hour outside of New Orleans)

Wendy Billiot is an absolutely superb guide and host for anyone looking to experience first hand southern Louisiana's coastal marshes and cypress swamps. On her boat, she has guided me, friends, and family in December 2016 and recently in June 2018 for a total of four days of photography excursions along the coast and through the inland Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge, known for its impressive cypress stands. Wendy grew up in these areas and knows the region's attractions and pitfalls extremely well -- you will always be safe with her (she cancelled one day due to possible high winds). What is more, she has a scientist's keen knowledge of the flora and fauna, as well as a sympathetic eye for the cultural history of the region. She conveys her knowledge with passion and humor. On a recent trip with my daughter, Beth, she took us to some of the bird boxes in Mandalay where she and colleagues are monitoring long term migration counts of the beautiful yellow prothonotary warblers. As a bonus, Wendy's two bedroom "camp" (six beds) on Bayou Delarge is a great place to stay, complete with all amenities and essential air conditioning. I will be returning in a year or so for my third excursion to complete my photographic survey. Wendy is an incomparable, impassioned, and rare guide. One of her standard or custom tours is not to be missed, just 1-1/2 hours from New Orleans.

Our tour with Capt. Wendy was really awesome and we truly enjoyed every minute! She took us on a tour through the swamp, which she seems to know like her own backyard, and told us so many details about the plants and animals there. We had great conversations on the challenges those wetlands face every day. She is very knowledgeable, and we could literally ask all the questions we had. It is really great to have people like her out there, showing tourists around, by respecting nature so gratefully. Thank you Capt. Wendy!

If you are looking for a unique experience into the swamps and bayous of cajun country…look no further! Capt'n Wendy will take you crabbing, fishing, or site seeing. She'll even teach you how to crab or fish if you don't know how. Enjoy photography? She'll take you to all the "hot" spots to get the best photos in the area. You won't be disappointed with a wetlands tour with Bayou Woman. And, if you need a place to stay, she has a cabin that could be included in your adventure!!! If you want to have a "real' cajun experience…book a trip with Bayou Woman Adventures! You won't be disappointed!

There may be many Bayou/Swamp "Tours, but there's only ONE Bayou Woman! Capt. Wendy takes ye on a journey - from the time ye arrive to the time ye leave, experience real life in South Louisiana's Bayou country. History, Culture, Food, Wildlife - and the challenges that all face in the loss o' freshwater wetlands and the land around them. This is not a sensationalized tourist ride, but an adventure into the lives o' folks who have lived, worked and raised their families in this area for Generations.
Capt. Wendy has an unique knowledge o' her home and neighbours and invites ye to share in her experiences both by boat and by land. Whether for a day or a longer stay, ye may leave the Bayou...but after this, the Bayou will always be close to ye - and a much greater understanding o' the unique Life and Culture in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana!

Captain Wendy was a delight. She took us on a tour seeing her coast line that is rapidly vanishing. She showed us the saltwater marsh and the freshwater swamps. Gators, gar, snakes, marsh hens, osprey, iris and stunning cypress trees. She gave us a lesson on land loss and erosion along with culture and breathtaking scenery! As a native of Louisiana all I can really say is Wendy is truly the Bayou Woman! Great trip!

I took part with three other women in a Bayou Woman Adventure. What a blast! We went crabbing, cooked our catch, then feasted! We also had the opportunity to dine out in nearby Houma to enjoy more seafood. Perhaps my favorite part of the weekend was spending time on the rear deck in great conversation making new friends!

I highly recommend this Friday afternoon to Sunday morning getaway to anyone wanting to experience true Cajun culture.
