We have arrived to the end of the academic school year.  It is a very busy time of the year for all of us.  Our students will be completing end of year assessments, celebrations, projects, activities, and memories.

We have had lots of great experiences with your students this year.  We wish the 8th graders good luck and hard work in high school.  We look forward to our 7th graders returning to their 8th grade year ready to work hard and finalize their junior high experience.

Have an amazing and safe summer, we will miss you!

To our incoming families and future Colts:

You are receiving a copy of the May Compton Courier to help inform you about upcoming activities regarding our 7th graders for the 2015-16 school year.  The Courier is mailed out at the beginning of each month and contains timely information about Compton.  Please take some time to look through this issue to get to know Compton a little better.

Summer Vacation is right around the corner, and that means Summer School is too!

Incoming Freshman to the Kern High School District will start June 1st @ 7:30AM - 12:00PM, summer school ends July 10th.

According to Mrs. Sotello, Journalism teacher at EBHS, “The primary reason for Summer School is to recover missing credits. Some incoming freshmen take summer school to help free up their schedule during the regular school year for electives like marching band or journalism.” The most requested class this summer is P.E.

Kern High School District will send letters home to the parents of successfully enrolled students.  Students who haven't received letters have the opportunity to enroll on the first day. Each session is 3 weeks long. Grades will be sent home.

Summer School transportation will not be provided. Students must find their own way to school.

If you have not had a chance to attend the Family Picnic days this school year, Wednesday, May 22 will be your last chance.

The Family Picnic days have been very popular with the students.  They enjoy the special attention and the alternative to the school lunch, such as pizza, sub sandwiches, and tacos.

Compton staff have enjoyed seeing parents and other relatives on campus just eating, relaxing, and visiting with their kids.

We were pleased with the turn out each month and hope it will increase even more next year.  Thank you so much for your positive participation in this monthly school event!

Summer is almost here! You know what that means - Summer School!

Compton students will attend summer school at Stiern Middle School. Summer School starts Monday, June 8th and ends Thursday, July 9th. There will be no school on Fridays or on Thursday, July 2 for Fourth of July.

Why go to summer school? Yes, we know summer is meant for summer, not school, but if you’re going to a new school and want to make friends from different elementary schools, then Summer School is for you! You also get a head start on academics.

Although the April 17th deadline has passed, you may still be able to enroll your student into Summer School. If you enrolled your child and want to know if it went through, you’ll be getting a letter of approval. If you do not get a letter call at 631-4661.

The Parent Orientation Meeting is on Monday, June 1st, 2015 @ 6:30 p.m. at Stiern Middle School. Bus students will be picked up at their neighborhood school. More transportation information will be given out at the meeting on June 1st.

Stiern Middle School is located at 2551 Morning Drive. Hope to see you and your child there!

The Compton Booster Club has a busy month ahead including the Picnics in the Park (one for 7th and one for 8th grade) and graduation.

Please contact Roxane Garcia at the school or via email at roxy1152@yahoo.com if you are able to assist with these activities.

Have you ever wondered why we do i-Ready? The purpose of i-Ready is to improve our math and reading abilities. The i-Ready tutorials are at the student’s level and  adjusts the lesson to match the student's current achievement. The lessons increase in difficulty, which means it pushes students to the next level as they respond to questions.  The goal for i-Ready is for students to  move up to the next grade level in Language Arts and math.

Next year, students will continue to work on i-Ready lessons in their elective classes. Furthermore, students who are more than two grade levels behind in reading or math will have an intervention class where they will also work i-Ready and other intervention activities.

According to Mrs. Baron, Compton JHS Academic Intervention Specialist, “Based on data, students reading and math skills did improve. Yet  the focus is not about improving math and reading grades but rather improving skills for both math and reading.”

The 2nd Period Writing Elective has produced the Compton Colt Courier since October 2015 with help from Mrs. Theresa Louie and myself. It has been please writing for you. These student have also created the quarterly planner and designed the school yearbook. Please Like us on Facebook & follow us on Twitter!

Tuesday, May 5 is National Day of the Teacher. Like every other holiday, this day only comes once a year. The only difference is that National Day of the Teacher  is never really talked about.

National Teacher Appreciation Day will take place on May 5. We use this day to thank our educators for all the hard work they do. They have to deal with a constant riot everyday known as “students.” Of course, not all students are bad, but when you think about how teacher put up with you and come back the next day, it really gives you something to admire.

Mrs. Soto is an awesome science and robotics teacher at Compton Jr. High School. She believes that science is exciting!

When she began her teaching career in 2001, Mrs. Soto taught at Stiern Middle School. She then transferred to the best school - Compton JHS - where she has been for the past 13 years. “I love how 7th graders are so curious and their personalities are wonderful.”

Students love the labs in her class. Ray, a former student, explained his enjoyment. “The best thing about her class are the labs. For example, the baby pig dissection. It included us dissecting a baby pig in a blue container.”

This year Mrs. Soto is also teaching the 7th grade P.L.T.W . elective, which stands for Project Lead the Way and is funded with a grant from Chevron.  Her students say that it is a really fun elective. 7th grader Cheyenne says that Mrs. Soto has a smile on her face and a positive attitude. Furthermore, Mrs. Soto teaches students how to make their classroom assignments as perfect as they can be.

¿Te has preguntado por qué hacemos i-Ready?
