‘The reality is, sometimes you lose. And you're never too good to lose, you're never too big to lose, you're never too smart to lose, it happens. And it happens when it needs to happen. And you have to embrace those things,’ she says, admitting that even Queen B has to admit defeat sometimes.’

Middle School
Academic Explorations at John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth
Deadline: January 15, 2014 (Priority) / April 12, 2014
Application: HERE
Location(s): Roger Williams University (Bristol, Rhode Island), Lafayette College (Easton, Pennsylvania), Haverford College (Easton, Pennsylvania), University of California, Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz, California), Seattle University (Seattle, Washington) & Marine Sciences Program (Baltimore, Maryland)
Background: CTY’s Academic Explorations consists of enrichment courses that provide students an introduction to topics that are not typically part of the standard middle or high school curriculum. These courses are designed to help students develop analytic and critical thinking skills while immersing them in a specific discipline for three weeks. Academic Explorations courses emphasize a lively exchange of ideas and problem solving; informed discussion rather than lecture is the norm, and students often have opportunities to present their work to the class. In these courses, students engage in a process of discovery as they apply concepts and theories to real world situations and become more informed, learned individuals in the process. Courses in the Academic Explorations program are taught at a level equivalent to an advanced high school or introductory college level course, and most courses do not have prerequisites or require any prior knowledge of a specific topic. As students are exposed to new fields of academic inquiry, they benefit from focused, individualized instruction and from pursuing a subject in-depth with peers who share their interests and abilities.

“Leaving this summit, leaving this space, I am going to:
Impart on my students the value of education. In doing so, I am going to be instructing my students on social justice topics in order to make them aware of the world around them and their role as individuals in America. I will lead my student to, on their own, be able to sift & weigh evidence, discern true from the false, real from the unreal and fact from fiction so that they can not only think intensively and critically but also do so with intelligence and character.”
