Just when it looked like Attorney General Eric Schneiderman might get a free ride to reelection, up steps a credible Republican to give him a run for his money.

John Cahill served as Gov. George Pataki’s second-in-command after a stint running the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Now a lawyer and consultant in private practice, he launched his campaign Sunday with a welcome declaration of support for New York’s version of the Dream Act — which would allow children of undocumented immigrants to qualify for state-sponsored college scholarships. And he vowed to be a staunch defender of charter schools, which need every friend in Albany they can get.

This page is not ready to offer an endorsement, but we heartily approve of choice and competition as keys to a healthy, accountable democracy.

Welcome to the race, Mr. Cahill, and may the best man win.
