Thank you for your interest in serving as a reviewer for The ALAN Review.  Reviewers play in integral role in ensuring the high quality, relevance, and importance of articles published in the journal. We aim to actively recruit a diverse team of reviewers who have expertise in young adult literature. Given ALAN’s long and strong culture of mentoring, less experienced reviewers are encouraged to apply.

Reviewers will serve a one-year, renewable term.  At the end of each volume year, the editorial team will evaluate the performance of reviewers in terms of the timeliness, thoroughness, and constructiveness of their reviews. While we expect the performance evaluations of Review Board members to be consistently high, we will recruit new reviewers each year to replace those with low evaluations.

Reviewers will be given three weeks to evaluate manuscripts based upon the significance of the piece to the field of young adult literature, soundness of the methods/approach employed/described, and clarity of the writing. Reviewers will be encouraged to provide evidence for claims and assertions made about the manuscript and provide suggestions for revision; we want the review process to be educative for authors.  Additionally, all reviewers will select one of the following recommendations for the manuscript:

     Accept (Accept with minor revisions)

     Conditionally Accept (Accept with necessary revisions)

     Revise and Resubmit for Review (Substantial revisions necessary; resubmit with no guarantee of publication)

     Reject (Not suitable for publication in TAR)
