Dubai to introduce tourist tax

Sunday, 04 Feb, 2014 0

Dubai is introducing a room tax to help pay for Expo 2020 projects.

Called the Tourism Dirham, the hospitality fee on hotel stays will be introduced at the end of March, the Dubai government announced.

It will be applied to guests staying in all hotels, hotel apartments, guesthouses and holiday homes, and will range from Dh7 (US$1.9) to Dh20 (US$5.4)

The amount of the fee, which will be applied per room, per night, depends on the type of hotel, The National newspaper reported.

Funds raised will support international promotion of the emirate and help to drive growth of tourism and trade.

Dubai estimates Expo 2020 will cost more than US$8.7 billion to promote and stage.
