The current relationship between Taiwan and China is outlined in a number of agreements under the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA). The Cross-Strait Agreement on Trade in Services, is one of the follow-up agreements under the ECFA. This trade agreement stipulates in writing the various matters related to gradually reducing or eliminating restrictions on trade in services across the Taiwan Strait.
On 17 March 2014, the reviewing process of this particular trade agreement was cut short by Chang Ching-chung, Legislator of Kuomintang (KMT), and sent directly to the plenary session for its second reading. Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan’s ruling party, holds a majority of seats in the legislature, appeals to approach China in many ways. Once the agreement has been made, rules of trade will affect in services which includes finance, principle of fairs, equitable treatments and other important topics that Taiwanese service suppliers are concerned with.
As the results, students had barricaded in Taiwan's Legislature since 18th of March whilst the protesters entered the main assembly hall inside the Legislative Yuan in Taipei on Tuesday evening.
Action of Occupy Taiwan Parliament and Anti-Cross-Strait Services Trade Agreement (Anti-CSSTA) has published the following demands:
1. Send back the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement.
2. The legislation of a monitoring mechanism for all future agreements with China.
3. The convention of a Citizens’ Constitutional Assembly.
4. Support the civil version of the “Draft Bill for Cross-Strait Agreements”.
