MONROVIA >> Police on Wednesday arrested a man who fled through several yards, entered an open garage and swiped a golf club and can of spray paint.

Lt. Nels Ortlund said residents in the 600 block of King Street called police around 3:25 p.m. and reported seeing a man running through yards and possibly carrying a coat.

Officers set up a perimeter, he said.

The station received several calls from people who spotted the man running in and out of backyards.

The culprit went into an unlocked garage on King Street. He also took a golf club and a can of spray paint but police weren’t sure if the items came from the garage or another location.

Ortlund said an officer saw the man and told him to stop. The suspect went over a wall and was confronted by two other officers.

“He raised the golf club in a threatening manner,” Ortlund said. “They (the officers) ordered him to put the golf club down. He complied and was taken into custody.”

Ortlund said the suspect, who lives in Monrovia, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, displaying a weapon in a threatening manner to an officer and resisting or obstructing an officer.

The suspect’s name and age weren’t available because he was still being booked.
