Some agenda items include: WASC Goals 2014-2017 and Single Plan for Student Achievement Goals 2014. All parents and students are welcome to attend. (Agenda) Community College Night - October 2ndOn October 2nd in the PHS Library from 7-8:30 pm Anna Pilloton, Outreach and School Relations Coordinator at the College of Marin, will present the benefits of attending a community college. Two-year colleges are less expensive and can be used as a launching point to a bachelors degree. Ms. Pilloton will discuss the current college landscape and why community college as a pathway to transfer to four year colleges and universities is a wonderful choice. She will review the benefits of cost savings and smaller class sizes with qualified professors. Other topics will include the California master plan, core courses and expectations, transfer pathways for UC, CSU and private schools, and college success. Education Speaker Series: How to Prepare Students for the Age of Technology, Tuesday, September 30The Piedmont Education Speaker Series has invited four local and nationally-known experts who work in computer science fields to share their thoughts and expertise in a panel discussion on How to Prepare Students for the Age of Technology, on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alan Harvey Theater. In this panel discussion, parents will learn more about the 1:1 Chromebook project being piloted at Millennium High School, Piedmont High School, Piedmont Middle School, and the elementary schools, how to set appropriate technology use guidelines for all ages, why even a brief introduction to computers is essential for everyone, and how an “innovator’s mindset” will help prepare students for success in the workplace. Speakers will include Stephanie Griffin, PUSD’s Director of Instructional Technology; serial entrepreneurs Ali Partovi, Co-Founder of Code.org, and Dion Lim, CEO of Next Lesson; and Kurt Fleischer, Senior Scientist at Pixar Animation Studios. PUSD families may purchase tickets to the full Education Speaker Series through the PUSD Online Registration system; others may contact the Fundraising Office at 653-1816. At this time, tickets for individual events cannot be purchased in advance. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. From 7:30 pm - 9 pm at Piedmont High School in the Alan Harvey Theater (note venue change from PHS Student Center). The Education Speaker Series is presented by the Piedmont Unified School District with the generous support of the Associated Parent Clubs of Piedmont. PHS Attending Challenge Success Fall Conference - September 26 - 27PHS will be sending a school team comprised of teachers, administrators, students and parents to the Challenge Success Fall Conference at Stanford University on September 26 & 27. The conference will provide an opportunity for our school team to learn more about school engagement, academic integrity and adolescent physical and mental health. This year, both new and returning schools will convene at Stanford University on Friday evening, September 26th for a parent education session open to the public featuring New York Times best-selling author and clinical psychologist, Dr. Wendy Mogel, Co-Director, Stanford d. life lab, Stanford Lecturer, Design Program, Dave Evans, and Challenge Success Co-Founders, Dr. Denise Pope and Dr. Madeline Levine. The $10 fee will be covered for those who RSVP to Principal Daniels or the PHS Parents' Club. Carpooling will be coordinated. Please see the flyer for details. Parents can provide updates to parent/guardian contact information, household information, and emergency contacts too. | School AnnouncementsPHS School and Debate Team Wins in its First Tournament [In the picture: Henry Hopcraft, Veronica Wong, Bryn Lawson, Alex Rickard, Keith Sibal, Ty Ozsoy, Max Lee, Will Reicher, Coach Carlton, Joseph Chan, Dan Reicher (Parent/Volunteer Judge)] The Piedmont High School Speech and Debate Team had their first tournament at Santa Rosa High School participating in Student Congress. In Student Congress, the students pretend to be members of the house debating resolutions. PHS sent 9 students debating topics as varied as having the United States use all means available to defeat Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and requiring all smart phones to have a kill switch. In all, the team debated five resolutions. Piedmont did very well taking home two trophies. Freshman Will Reicher took second place and Sophomore Henry Hopcraft placed fifth. The Speech and Debate team is always looking for more students to participate with practices after school Wednesdays and Fridays. Please advise your registered student to pick up a PSAT study guide from the Counseling Office. CAHSEE Testing (Make Ups)Students who have not taken the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) or unsuccessfully completed any subject (ELA or Mathematics) will have the opportunity to retake or take the tests on October 7 (ELA) and/or 8 (Math). Families whose student/s will have to take CAHSEE will be sent a letter and a message via Infinite Campus. Over 22,000 high school students participated last year by taking the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT. Nine PHS students are being recognized this year for their superior performance on the PSAT.
