Winter has arrived in Queenstown

Winter has arrived in Queenstown With snow on the hills again and forecast highs of just 7degrees today and the same all week. Coronet Peak mean time expects to have minus figures overnight all week and highs of just 1 degrees maximum.  Snow guns are all firing presently.
For those who love winter it’s time to get the skis tuned, pull out the gear and stoke up the fires with a smile.
The Torpedo7 Peak to Peak
The race is scheduled for the 12th Aug which should give heaps of time for the snow to settle in on the ski element - Homeward Bound.

Whether you’re a skier, snow boarder, mountain biker, runner or kayaker, its time to get primed up for this year’s Torpedo7 Peak to Peak multisport event.

The race starts high on the Remarkables ski field with a 2km ski or snow board down to the Remarkables access road. A 17km mountain bike down the road takes competitors to the edge of Lake Wakatipu in Frankton for a 7km paddle into Queenstown bay. From downtown Queenstown the final two race stages are a 9km run to Coronet Alpine Hotel and then a 9km bike ride up to the finish line at Coronet Peak.

Pulling a team together is often the best way to enter the  Peak to Peak for a first timer. Competition is fierce for the team trophies and many corporates and businesses use the race as a team-building exercise or a healthy social outing. Teams can comprise two people or as many as five (with each person doing only one leg of the race).
Entries are already arriving from individuals and team with one go the first to enter being a team from Southland Boys.

Kayaking Team
The New Zealand kayaking team made an emphatic statement at the second ICF World Cup of the season, heading home with four more medals from Szeged in Hungary.

Lisa Carrington, Aimee Fisher, Kayla Imrie and Caitlin Ryan won the K4 500m title for the second week in a row
“Every time we jump into that boat, I think we learn some more and we progress further,” Imrie said. “Last week as a crew was our first race together, and we just wanted to progress from that.” Carrington, focusing on team boats this season, was pipped by Russian Elena Aniushina by just 0.085secs in her K1 500m final yesterday but earned a measure of revenge by combining with Caitlin Ryan to win the K2 500m.

And Fisher added an equally-impressive silver in the K1 200m, an event Carrington has dominated for the last six years.

Cuba
Brandi and myself have had the chance to check out ‘cycling in Cuba’
Watch out for a itinerary for this amazing country. It’s literally like stepping back in time - the cars are from the 50’s, and oxen pulling plows in the paddocks from a century or two before that, but the hospitality from the Cubans is fantastic.
May was a hot time to be there however with temperatures in the thirties  (hot enough to melt a patch of a tube) Pictures on Facebook and stories to follow.
