With 1971 came a move away from brutish performance and gimmickry. Gone were the hideaway headlamps, big spoilers, and race stripes. In were a soft ride, leather interior, and incessant talk of “luxury.”
Perhaps the most muscular of Cougar muscle, the Eliminator exuded all the tropes of a brawny era: rear spoiler, hood scoop, race stripes, blacked-out rims, a humongous motor, and an aggressive name. The Eliminator was exclusive for 1970, arguably the peak year for muscle cars. Thereafter, Mercury reeled the Cougar from performance and emphasized luxury.
