Lift It Higher: The Saturdays Discography Rate

Fuck yeah at White Lies being crowned the TENTH BEST SONG THEY HAVE! Be proud, people! And if I'm correct, second highest ranked non-single?

I played it at a wedding I DJ'd a few years ago and people left the dancefloor. Sad times.

Faster would be a great wedding track (if you ignore everything apart from "you are the only one who makes my heart beat faster").

Now that I think about it I would probably have a seizure if Faster was ever played when I was out.

At this point I would be happy with any of the remaining songs winning because they're all fucking fantastic, but ideally Not Giving Up or All Fired Up will.

Which song just misses out on the top five, something it didn't do on the charts?

Is it love that's in the air?

Lowest Score: 3.5 x 1 (Midnight)

The second last song to leave from Living for the Weekend is its fourth single, which is an explosion of musical joviality with references to the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Britney Spears, “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John, and has a "baby, baby, baby" hook lifted from Kylie's “Spinning Around” (Well, I think so!). It’s basically a love letter to pop music, and is the kind of thing only a group as unashamedly uncool as The Saturdays could get away with, and obviously I mean that in a very good way! And, of course, I cannot contain my love for how much Mollie there is on this track! I remember freaking the fuck out when they released that clip of “you take me back in time, to 1999...” as a teaser. It was a dream come to life. I was not ready.

My favourite television performance was the Surprise Surprise one, it’s gloriously jubilant, and I was killed stone dead when they performed it on the Greatest Hits tour with not only a sample of “Stayin’ Alive” to play them in, but also MOLLIE SINGING THE CHORUS OF “…BABY ONE MORE TIME”. Pretty sure I was close to having some sort of cardiac episode. Amazing. But enough of me being embarrassing!

Mikey1701 thinks it deserves its place in the upper echelons: “YES. Another one of their finest works. Everything on this aligns to create pop perfection. The harmonies, the melody, the production and the over all feel of the track. Plus they managed to slot in a flawless reference to Britney, which is everything,” WhenTheSunGoesDown loves how full of joy it is: “One of the happiest, funnest pop songs ever made! I don't know who decided to put a kazoo(?) in at the end but I love that crazy decision,” and DJHazey might be dead: “Mollie's opening, the disco era name-dropping, the long drawn out "Ohhhh's" to propel the chorus, and the "Boy, you make me" vocal gunfire to officially annihilate everything in their path...shake me if I'm dreaming because this song is too uncanny to be real”. You OK hun?

Deborux wishes it had existed earlier: “love this so much, wish it had been the lead single from Living for the Weekend. The verses, the bridges and the choruses are all highs and everybody sounds great, even Mollie! The random saxophone annoys me though and sounds really out of place. It annoys me enough to take a whole point off it,” and tylerc904 finds it to be a standout single too: “The saving grace on this album. I HATED Gentleman and found What About Us pretty generic, but this totally checked all the boxes. The Donna Summer bit is classic”. Jersey likes the namedropping too: “The references are cute and I really like the 80's influence. I don't see the 'OMG AMAZING' quality that most members see but it's almost there,” and runrocketboy is slain by The King: “The 90's references kill me every time. Mollie. Britney. The Una/Mollie "Hit me baby one more time!" slays me every time”.

Oh good, I’m glad that we’re on the subject of Mollie, for she gets some much deserved love here. Entropy pulls up her parts as the highlights that they are: “What a fun little song. That’s all I feel needs to be said. Except that Mollie’s opening is wonderful and the Britney reference gets me every time,” and Mr. Humes comes out of the woodwork as a Mollie stan: “I remember not liking this at all at first (the heresy...), then falling in love with Mollie’s verses and the middle eight. I don't really love the other girls' bits, so basically Mollie makes this what it is. My complain is that it doesn't fit Living For The Weekend at all. But again, what does?” Indeed. Jacket is another who is loving a bit of King action, and the song too: “Mollie at center stage (out now on iTunes) is amazing. I can imagine her excitement when they told her she was singing the Britney line. The chorus is among their most melodic and the whole thing is just pure euphoria. Should’ve been massive”.

I’m sure Vixen will be pleased with the Mollie comments, and gosh, I never knew she was so enamoured with the song: “I think the fact that this song managed to gather that many radio support right after ‘Gentleman’ flopped on its arse really talks volumes about how great the song truly is. It’s one of their best, in fact, maybe even in their top 3. That chorus is just everything that is right about Pop music and I just can’t get enough of it, no pun intended. It’s just so typically Saturdays, and to me, it’s definitely in the same vein as ‘Higher’, ‘Up’ and ‘Ego’ even it it sold considerably less. I’m willing to bet it would have sold more had the track got the same radio support as these previously mentioned. Anyhoo, this remains one of their strongest efforts to date and I did consider it a lot for my 11, but went for another one. I almost regret it now because I truly believe this is amongst their very best. What a fucking song, seriously. Mollie living her dream and giving us a Britney moment is something I didn't know I needed. I will forever live for that mash-up during the Greatest Hits Tour as well. What a fucking moment”. Stan a bit!

GhettoPrincess gave it the first of its two 11s: “I just absolutely adore this, everyone is vocally on point. I love the Britney reference especially coming from Mollie. No Frankie vocals. Vanessa doing great adlibs again and the fact that it's undeniably cheesy modern pop. Currently my favourite song so it has to be my 11”. That little Frankie drag! Pim-Em-Elle might want a word with you: “I basically love everything about it except the lack of Frankie. Believe it or not I reckon the song would have been elevated some if Frankie sang a few verses and not just the 'sh-sh-sh' bit. It's just the right amount of pop without getting tiring”. munro thinks it’s an excellent little outlier: “A stand out song in The Saturdays discography due to it sounding so different to the majority of their other songs but for all of the good reasons,” JamesJupiter is loving the chorus: “Loses half a point for some pretty average lyrics in the verses, but that chorus!” and Totto is a fan: “Quality song. Vanessa ad-libs are lush”. I must say, ‘SO FIIINE, OOOOOOOOOOH’ is the best non-Mollie part.

Some are kind of bemused by the piles of praise this is receiving, like MrJames: “I mean, it's good, but I can't say that I understand why this has gathered so much pace as everyone's favourite recently? It's a fab little ditty, but I wouldn't say I wanted it to win,” and Philllll: “It’s a good song, the best? Absolutely not. I sometimes adore it and sometimes I can’t switch it fast enough. The Wideboys Radio Edit is superb”. Jam isn’t very taken by it either: “I never really got the love for this one, to me it just comes across as a bit cheesy and sticks out,” it’s ancient history for phily693: “It’s lovely but that’s it. It’s one of those songs you have on your iPod for a few weeks and listen to a few times and then delete never to be thought of again,” Shockbox is over it too: “Got old quite quick but was obsessed for a while,” and Midnight is the low scorer: “Far from my preferred singles, but I like that melody in the chorus. Especially the first part. I'm thankful for a certain B-side that came along with it! That's the highlight, ha”. To the depths with you, to join that b-side!

Guy was maybe with them at one point, but has learned to love it, and liked the promo blitz, which was indeed amazing: “I was pretty underwhelmed when I first heard this song, but it quickly grew into becoming one of my favorite singles of theirs. While Vanessa's adlibs and the middle 8 are both massive highlights for me, Una's "OHHHHHHHH is it love that's in the ayerrrrrr" entering the final chorus takes the cake as the best part of the song. The single campaign for Disco Love is probably the last time we'll ever see The Sats and their team bring their A-game for a release. They seemed so determined for the single to be a success and that was refreshing to see after every single campaign since My Heart Takes Over felt so.. limp”. Lastly, here’s 2014, who gave it that second 11: “Had to be my 11, it was close between this and All Fired Up but this sums up The Saturdays more for me; fun, pure pop perfection, and the lyrics are undeniable. Love it”.
