Memorial Day weekend may only be halfway done, but the Nassau and Suffolk County police department have already "arrested at least 60 people so far during the Memorial Day weekend on charges of drunken or drugged driving," according to Newsday.

Here's how the numbers breakdown: In Nassau County, 39 people were arrested on DWI charges between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. the next day on Friday-Saturday and Saturday-Sunday. Suffolk County saw 21 arrested for "DWI and driving-while-ability-impaired charges between 4 p.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday" (the numbers for Saturday-Sunday aren't available yet).

Newsday points out, "The number does not include DWI arrests by State Police, the village or city police departments, or the sheriff's department." Four years ago, Nassau County introduced a novel concept: A "Wall of Shame" for arrested DWI drivers, launched over the Memorial Day weekend, but it was removed in October after legal challenges.
