My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts... for more, visit Punya Reviews...

I read Norse Jewel, Gina Conkle’s debut novel and thought it was a wonderful read. At that time, I didn’t know it was going to be a series. But the story ended in a way that left some confusions, felt like there were “more”. A year or two later, when the author told me she was going to develop this story into a series, I was super excited. To Find a Viking Treasure is the book 2 of Norse series.

Now, let me tell you that I read book 1 in 2013 so my memory is a bit vague. I do remember the initial storyline, and the characters, H Hakan, a Viking lord and his newly bought Frankish slave, Helena who was the h of the story. Hakan was returning home and bought Helena from a slave trader on the way. Actually he bought some slaves, Helena and her friend Sestra were among them. I remember that Helena came from a good family, but circumstances brought her where she was, while Sestra, in true sense, have always been a thrall.

Hakan was married before but that was over with his nutcase first wife. He had the need of womanly touch in his longhouse. He had a little boy named Erik, whom Astrid won’t even let him visit. But the boy would always find a way to steal away to meet his father when he was back from one conquest or the other. The father-son bond was much stronger than what Astrid could do. Soon Hakan also begins noticing Helena for who she was— a loyal, kind-hearted woman who was also a hard-worker. She was the polar opposite of Astrid; both in looks and in temperament. For Helena, she was apprehensive at first about her treatment, but soon she finds that Hakan is a kind, fair as well as a generous master. She soon begins having feelings for Hakan, though she knew the only thing she can ever be to him is a mistress if there’s anything. But Hakan even wasn’t like that, take pleasure from his slaves or thralls then discard them.

Things weren’t going well in Uppsala with the rebellion fired on by King Olof’s son Anund Jakub. Time were about to get worse. The bond between Helen and Hakan are put to test a few times before they finally begin to realize that they need each-other. Helena knew Hakan would always keep her safe, while Hakan knew Helena won’t break his heart the way Astrid had. What she did left Hakan extremely bitter and disillusioned. Until Helena, he was cold and distant where women were concerned.

Sestra was a secondary character but I didn’t find her so noticeable to have her own book. But there was a sad, heart-breaking story there that would’ve remained undiscovered had the author not given her her own voice. I don’t really remember Brandr much from book 1, if he was even there or not but when I was reading To Find a Viking Treasure (formerly titled “Norse Fire”) that was the only thing that bugged me. Even though Helena and Hakan are seen in this book, and I’d recommend that you read book 1 before as the story is a continuation from how it ended there, To Find a Viking Treasure is a commendable stand-alone because it was more focused on building Brandr and Sestra’s relationship than anything else. Their past and histories are revealed as they bonded as confidences, rather than an actual narration of it.

Norse Jewel was a clean romance as a whole because there weren’t anything but a few kisses between Hakan and Helena. However, don’t make that mistake with To Find a Viking Treasure if you’ve read book 1 already. It’s much hotter, definitely not a clean romance! ;)

When the story begins, King Olof has left after a rebellion by his son Jakub, who wants to bring back the old ways of worshipping the Gods. He has gathered quite a bit of support, yet also has the means to force people who would not agree with his ways. He’s got people working for him, what we’d call outlaws, vicious, murderous Vikings who care for nothing or no one but themselves. Mercenaries too.

Gorm, the villain we saw in the previous book, who was also Astrid’s lover, has taken over the area and Hakan is extremely worried about it. Gorm is supposed to be working for Jakub, while Hakan and his people were serving Olof. Sorry for my vague reference because I don’t really remember a lot about the history and I wouldn’t like to confuse anyone. But as I said, this didn’t hinder my enjoyment since the focal point of this book was Sestra and Brandr’s relationship. They had their own history to share with us.

Enemies finally catch up with Hakan to punish him for not bending to the new law and the leader. With that Helena, Hakan’s new wife, his sister Lady Madred, her husband Lord Madred and their children are now in grave danger. No telling of the thralls and servants since no one really cares for their well-being. Well, most masters apparently don’t. The man who captures Hakan betrayed everyone’s trust. He was also the son of the couple who were holding a celebration of sort where everyone was present. It’s there the hell breaks loose. His dislike for Hakan was apparent but it seemed he wasn’t willing to spill blood right away. He also had no intentions of supporting Gorm, who has been murdering and pillaging throughout the area, burning down houses and killing livestock, looting whatever he and his men could.

This man wants to “work” with Hakan, if he can find the gold and the looted stash Gorm has hidden away somewhere. He’s willing to set Hakan free, for a price. Hakan and Lady Madred’s longhouse and everything else have to be burned and destroyed to show Gorm that he’s working with him. In exchange Hakan and his family and servants would be able to escape with their lives. At that point, Hakan had no other option but to accede to this man’s demand. He needed to save his loved ones first. Revenge can come later.

Sestra and Brandr were present at that celebration. In fact, Sestra was residing with that man’s family and been working there to help out. She has made a few good friends too. Helena’s station in life elevated greatly for her to call her a “friend”, though Helena herself doesn’t mind at all. But the reality was, Sestra was still a thrall and she would have to be sold to a new master soon. In the beginning of the story, she even gets the news that she’d indeed been sold and would be soon going to her new master, whoever he was.

Sestra had known Brandr for a while now and had a strong crush on him. Keep in mind, being a thrall, she often had to sleep with men, most of the times against her wish, to “comfort” or “entertain” them as asked by whoever she was working for. Her previous masters were like that; she’s still forced to do it. Though Sestra has gotten used to with her station and this lifestyle, she didn’t like it by any means. Brandr wasn’t one of those men though. He’s one odd looking Viking with dark hair, instead of platinum blonde. He also seemed foreign, almost exotic for some reason. There were stories and secrets Brandr hid, Setra was pretty sure of it but no one really knew of his origin. He had been working for Hakan for a long time now and that’s all he liked others to know.

For all their banters and easy flirtations with sometimes playfully biting remarks, Brandr has never made a move on Sestra, a truth that stung her a lot. He would’ve been someone she would’ve given herself to unconditionally. But why had he never done so when so many men had in the past? It was apparent that the chemistry was there… Maybe he doesn’t really want her, who knows. After all, she’s nothing but a thrall without any hope of ever being freed, no matter how much she pined for freedom. Brandr didn’t seem particularly wealthy, so there was no way he could afford buying her either. Those were the questions that would haunt Sestra, though she tried her best to show she didn’t care at all.

On this way, it seemed Brandr was paying a lot of attentions to her. Either his eyes were tracking her or she’d find him waiting when she was expecting him the least. His dark, rugged good-looks and that almost imperceptible flicker of smile would set Sestra’s heart racing. And she’s no green girl on her first crush. Well, for all intents and purpose, Brandr probably was her first crush; someone she craved desperately but had no idea what would come from this craving. Besides who says he feels the same?

When the trouble begins and Gorm’s gold is being sought, Sestra steps up even knowing this was a dangerous path. She had come across a place such as they were describing on one of her excursions, which is in a close by island. But Sestra wanted to help Hakan and Helena in any way she could.

Even though Brandr had other plans, he would’ve fought and helped Hakan in anyway. He was leaving for Gotland, never to look back. His service to Hakan has ended, and now he’s determined to do something on his own. Even though Sestra has tempted him since the day he’s set his eyes on her, his feelings for her weren’t that of simple lust. Brandr had deeper feelings for the beautiful, red-headed thrall but he had nothing to offer her. He didn’t have much, no way to even buy her to be with her permanently. So he’d decided to move on in hopes that someday he can start anew.

But things weren’t that simple or even easy. At first, Brandr couldn’t leave Hakan in these dangerous times. His ship was waiting to leave the next day, yet he couldn’t. Hakan has become more of a friend than his master in the long years he’d served him. Then, when Sestra offers herself up to help on this quest, he couldn’t imagine letting her go with someone else. He also offers to help, escorting Sestra to that island and search for that illusive looted stash of Gorm and his men.

Sestra and Brandr sail for the island all by themselves. But this journey to proverbial unknown becomes one of the most important journeys of their lives. It wasn’t just about finding gold or even buying freedom. When they’re stuck on that island for a few days with danger dogging their steps, both are willing to open up about themselves; about their past, present… and what future may hold for them with or without the gold. To one, the much needed freedom and a life with the love of her life, and to the other the woman he craved but thought he couldn’t have. It wasn’t just about discovering each-other once again; it was also a journey of self-discovery. But the best discovery was to learn that they’d loved each-other all along, only circumstances weren’t on their side.

I really enjoyed To Find a Viking Treasure and now, interested for the upcoming installments. It hinted at some new characters and from the blurb of the next book, I can see whose it’s going to be. Really excited to find out more! 4 solid stars and highly recommended.

4 and 1/2 stars - Exciting Viking Tale

Set in 1022 in the kingdom of Svea (Sweden), this is the story of warring Viking leaders and a rough yet noble warrior who serves the man who saved his life. Brandr wants to leave Uppsala to start a new life, but his desire to protect the slave, Sestra, keeps him from leaving.

Sestra is a thrall who has known only abuse from men who lust after her beauty. But when she tells the Viking leader of a treasure hidden by their enemy, Brandr and she are sent to find it. To Sestra, Brandr is a mysterious figure, a man of strength whose only words are ones meant to tease yet he always treats her with respect.

This is a Viking version of lost on a desert isle. Alone and facing the enemy who would be eager to kill them, Brandr and Sestra discover passion between them as they fight to survive. Choices must be made by each as to what is truly important. Brandr is a freeman and Sestra longs to be free. She hopes the treasure will bring her that freedom.

Conkle has obviously done considerable research into the Viking life, which enriches the tale. Some exciting scenes will hold your attention and for those who like a spicy romance, Conkle has delivered a romance with many scintillating love scenes.

Yum... A fierce and smexy Viking!

I read a lot of historical romance but unfortunately there have been fewer books featuring rugged Vikings. Of those that I have read, though, this might be my new favorite!

Sestra is a slave and even though she now lives and works in a somewhat safer environment, she still knows her place. That much is made clear when she learns that she has just been bought. But by who, she has no idea.

Brandr loves getting a rile of the red-headed Sestra. Tonight, he's come for one last taunt of the woman before sailing away, for good. But when a dispute among two men causes a stir, he considers stepping in to help a friend.

However, it's Sestra who offers a solution to their problem. She knows the whereabouts of a hidden treasure that could change everything--for the both of them. Her piece of the pot can be used to buy her freedom, his to secure his future. Together, they set out to find the treasure and just might discover something more valuable along the way.

I really liked this book. There was a little deeper and darker of an emotional element to this book than I had expected. Of course, things were like that during that time in history. Slaves were owned, women were not equals in many's eyes, and conflicts were often solved with violence. I thought that this story had a great sense of realism that made this believable and relatable.

I found myself immersed in the story from the first page. The pacing is quick and there really isn't a lot of downtime because even the slower scenes were full of important details, not to be missed. The plot was intriguing. The storytelling was solid. I read this in two sittings and didn't want to put it down.

The romance between Sestra and Brandr is great, too. It's fun and flirty, then tense and spicy, and finally full-on steamy. Brandr tries to fight his attraction but Sestra is determined and won't let a little thing like his stubborn willpower get in her way. The two develop a rather adorable relationship that really gets tested in the end.

In closing...
This is the second book of this series and I would love to read the first one and future installments. Four suns!

My book club and I really enjoyed NORSE JEWEL a few months back, and the minor character of Sestra was one we all pointed out as someone who could have an interesting book of her down, and she got one! I liked this book even more than NORSE JEWEL - there's more passion/tension, and who doesn't like a treasure hunt? I read this in one sitting and look forward to the next!

This is the second book in the Norse series but it reads like a standalone book.

Great plot

Fantastic story with just a few editing errors that bring this book down a star. I love the characters and the trials that make them stronger.

Sestra has been a thrall, a slave, a servant all her life, and she is now a serving wench in an inn in Uppsala. She has been sold yet to another, and she will be leaving on the morrow, as will Brandr, it turns out; he to Gotland. There is much political unrest in the kingdom of Svea in the year 1022: King Olof has been driven away from the throne by his son Anund Jakob, but worse, the vile Dane Gorm is set on usurping the throne. The Viking Brandr has been having a bit of fun since the summer teasing Sestra, but unlike other patrons has not touched her. That particular night, Sestra learns that Gorm has hidden a treasure on an island, and she knows where. Getting her hands on some money could buy her the freedom she secretly years for. Brandr, who is a scout for Lord Hakan, needs that treasure to stop Gorm from making his dastardly intentions a reality. Sestra takes one step on her path to freedom: she will accompany Brandr, and he cannot refuse; time is of the essence for Uppsala.

What magnificence from the amazing Gina Conkle! I am a Scandinavian history buff, and TO FIND A VIKING TREASURE fills me with joy, awe, and complete happiness! Ms. Conkle’s incandescent, vivid, and eloquent prose brings everything, and I mean everything, for Medieval Sweden to life, down to the tiniest details with startling historical accuracy: food, clothing; TO FIND A VIKING TREASURE is a Medieval Swedish feast for the eyes and the soul. I saw every gesture, every tree, and Brandr and Sestra became real people in my mind for a few hours. The chemistry and interactions between Sestra and Brandr sizzle and sparkle, the dialogues are just perfect, and here I must praise Ms. Conkle’s lack of pretension at simulating Norse speech or peppering the text with accurate or pseudo Old Norse; she kept everything simple and it works beautifully.

TO FIND A VIKING TREASURE is a majestic tale story filled with life-threatening adventures that left me gasping, and a love of such depth that tears filled my eyes on more than one occasion. The sex scenes are honest, filled with unbridled passion and happened exactly as they should have, and Sestra and Brandr are unforgettable and splendid characters. I cannot wait for the next instalment already! TO FIND A VIKING TREASURE is a resounding success on all fronts: if you are craving to experience what historical accuracy means for a novel set in Medieval Sweden, this is your book! Mycket bra!

To Find a Viking Treasure by Gina Conkle is all the steamy and sexy that you could ever want from a viking story.

“Growing up a slave of Frankia formed her differently. Sex was her currency. Survival was all she knew.”

Sestra was one of those characters that brought the spunk and sass to this otherwise Medieval setting. Viking settings always seem dark to me. All that pillaging and burning down of villages are always prominent during those times. Well, expect to get that with this story. I also enjoyed reading the teasing dialogue between her and Brandr. There was a fierce sexual undercurrent between them; trust me when I say that their love scenes are smokin’ hot.

“This is what happens when courage demanded action.”

The one thing that stood out to me was the theme of courage. Both characters’ resolve and mettle are tested throughout the story. They run into adversaries, and are also given the choice to choose life over the greed of coin and jewels. That was especially hard for Sestra because she was a slave. It was either buy your freedom or get bought. But in the end she chose courage, both when it came to fighting and her will.

A little note...

-This can be read as a standalone. It was mostly about Sestra and Brandr. Even though characters from the previous book made appearances.
-Not a lot of action. The majority of that takes place towards the end of the book.
-This was my first Gina Conkle read. I found that there was an easy flow to her words and storytelling.

This was an engaging, quick read! I was a bit hesitant at first to read it, due to my past experiences with Viking romances. Most of the time the chauvinism is too much, and I throw the book at the wall in disgust. Not the case with this one! While there is some amount of male arrogance, this is to be expected due to the time period and the Viking culture. Gina was great at blending the facts of the time with the romance desired by many readers. It's accurate in its history without turning me off.

Sestra is a thrall - born a slave and used by men for their pleasure. One man stands out, however, in his quest for her. Brandr has admired Sestra for a long while, but he has kept his distance believing he is not good enough for her. When they are thrown together in search of buried treasure, they grow close and discover their love for each other. But Sestra remains a slave, and her life is not hers to give, no matter how much she wants to give it to Brandr.

I loved the banter between Sestra and Brandr! At first, I was a bit wary of Brandr, given his bold flirtations with Sestra. I thought this might end up being one of those romances where the hero seduces the heroine, even though she says no, and justifies it because she experiences pleasure. That's what I'm used to in Viking romance. In this case, Sestra actually ends up seducing Brandr, despite his attempts to create distance between them. It was a nice change of pace, and it made their relationship seem more equal and fulfilling.

This was my first book by Gina Conkle, but I am sure it won't be my last! It was enjoyable and thrilling.

Everyone has a past, but not everyone has a future. Sestra fears what her future will bring, for she has just been sold to a new unknown master. She has long stopped dreaming of freedom. But she can't stop her feelings for a certain rough-souled Viking, called Brandr.

Brandr has no intention of falling in love with a flame-haired thrall, but fate throws them together.

Sestra has knowledge where a great Viking treasure horde has been buried. If she can find the treasure, then maybe she can buy her freedom. But what use is freedom if Brandr isn't there to share it with her?

I cannot put into words how much I loved this book. Conkel has brought the Viking world back to life in this beautiful, beautiful, romance.

Sestra is the most perfect of heroines. She has been a slave since birth and has never known what freedom is, and now her master want to sell her, and there is nothing she can do about it. However, despite all this, she isn't a bitter character. She is kind and compassionate, feisty when she needs to be, and can give as good as she gets, especially when it comes to Brandr.

I loved the banter between Brandr and Sestra. It made their relationship very real in the telling and believable.

I really liked Brandr. He is the perfect match for this fiery red-head and despite trying to keep his distance from Sestra, he feels compelled to protect her. And protect her he will, no matter what the cost to him.

An evocative, emotional read, set in the land of the Vikings. What could be better?

I Highly Recommend.

although i don't usually read this of historical romance, i was grabbed and pulled into the story from the first page. i found myself intrigued and fascinated by the historical facts in the story and the characters were a joy to get to know and watch them grow into their own. i also found myself rooting for Brandr and Sestra and booing the villain and then on the next page laughing out loud at something else. it was a truly wonderful book.

i loved this book. it had all of the elements that i look for in a great love story. the characters were intriguing and had depth and drew me into the story effortlessly. i found my self becoming angry, sad, happy and all the other emotions right along with Brandr and Sestra. i am already planning to read it again just in case i missed anything and i can't WAIT for the next book in the series(AND THE 1 BEFORE) so i can find out what happens with them next not to mention the others that are part of her "Viking" series that have their own stories to tell.

if this is the type of book that you enjoy you shouldn't miss this one and if you are not into this kind of book you should give this one a try and perhaps it will change your mind the same as it did mine.

I am not sure when I got this book but I found myself reading a few pages the other night and could not stop.

Brandr is a true Viking of old, a warrior thru and thru. A man of few words and simple pleasures. After his hard life he is now free again, wanting only to go home and build ships as he had when young.

Sestra, a Frankish thrall, or slave, just wants a peaceful life. She is told she was bought and now has a new master over her. When was comes calling she is the one who can help stop it.

Having his on the shore watching the unknown items being his Sestra finds herself with some knowledge that will make it break her world. Now Sestra and Brandr are traveling to this little island to recover the treasure to prevent a war.

A trader is in their midst. Not knowing this, the two are searching and being watched from a distance. Once they have the treasure they are attacked. Brandr tries to figure a way out that will not get Sestra killed.

The bad men killed, treasure lost, two broken soles find comfort. Brandr and Sestra go back for the treasure. They find their way to the meeting place only to lose the treasure again and captured.

This story is full of twists and turns which make for a rich full adventurous read

Excellent is such a paltry description.

I love to read the stories that Gina Conkle writes! I fell in love with Lord Hakan in Norse Jewel when I was also introduced to Brandr. I am so excited to be able to read his story now. Sestra and Brandr are well matched and I love the humor and bickering between them. The plot is rich and strong.
This book has the author's signature of attention to historical detail. I can picture the Vikings and the peoples of the era down the lacings of their boots. She gives us word pictures of their daily lives and struggles.
The characters are so well developed that they become a fixture in my thoughts long after the last page is read.
For me flow of the story is of utmost importance to a good strong book. I begin to read the story and I don't want to leave. I become a passenger on the boat, a guest in the longhouse and a witness to the battles. Their story becomes my story.
I read a great many books and have enjoyed the work of many good authors. Gina Conkle is not a good author, she is an outstanding author and again she has given the reader a story to love, characters to take into their hearts and a book to enjoy over and over!

An excellent medieval romance in an authentic setting. I have visited Uppsala on a number of occasions and have emerged myself in the history and the culture of the area, and the site where pagan sacrifices took place, still stands today in Gamla Uppsala. The story of Brandr and Sestra takes place at a tempestuous time in history. Brandr has earned his freedom from slavery, and Sestra dreams of being free. When it is discovered that Sestra has unwittingly observed the burial of treasure, Brandr is sent to protect her while they retrieve it in order to pay off their attackers. In reliance upon one another, Brandr and Sestra face a number of difficulties in obtaining the treasure, thereby setting free their latent emotions and feelings for one another. The descriptions of slavery are horrendous, but in light of era they are relevant to the story. A well written book, however it is not one for sensitive readers, given the descriptions of brutality and scenes of intimacy. This is the first book I have read by Ms Conkle and I am looking forward to reading more of her work.

Sestra has been a servant, slave all her life. Brandt is a Viking warrior who has been teasing and flirting with Sestra. She learns that Gorm, the vile Dane is set on usurping the throne, has hidden a treasure on an island. She overhears where the treasure is hidden, she’s dreamed of buying her freedom and the treasure is the answer to buying her freedom. Brandr, who is a scout for Lord Hakan and he needs to find this treasure to stop Gorm and his plans to usurping the throne. The two must work together, they must learn to trust one another, and can they resist the sizzling passion between them. Great read with Viking history.

A steamy Viking tale. Told among days of political upheaval, everything familiar will soon be gone. Even the alehouse in which slave girl Sestra works is burnt to the ground, presumably to "help" their cause. Being braver than she knows, or perhaps because she has no other choice, Sestra is sent off on a mission, a treasure hunt, with the solid, darkly handsome Brandr.

I will warn you, the treasure found comes in different ways and forms.
This is not a read for the feint - hearted. There is skin involved, near - death, and secrets revealed.
Will Sestra learn more about herself and change her mind about what her future should look like?
I would love to also have a less sexually charged version for younger readers.
This is a strong about discovering self and true strengths.

Love this story of Sestra and Brandr. Your writing had me smiling, I laughed out loud and you brought me to tears in more than one point in the story. You are very talented and I'm thankful that you have the opportunity to create and publish!! I hope there will be more of these two featured in your upcoming books.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

To Find a Viking Treasure (Book 2 in the Norse Series) by Gina Conkle
***I was given an advanced reading copy of this book in return for an honest review***

In this book we follow Sestra and Brandr.

Sestra is a Thrall, slave. She finds out that she has been sold to whom she does not know.

Brandr really likes Sestra, but he has planned to leave the village.

This is a fast paced book. If you have read and enjoyed Norse Jewel (Book 1) then you will love this one.

I love this series and can not wait to see what happens next :)

I have voluntarily submitted this review after reading an advanced copy of this book.
I have enjoyed this historical recount of the times of the Vikings ruled the North. The story unravels with drama and gut clenching moments, that with the charisma between the two main characters, adds up to a fantastically good read. For those that are seeking the romantic side of a story, what could be more romantic than a woman willing to sacrifice herself for a man.

AMAZING !!!!!

This is a must read !! I fell in love with Helena and Kaken in Gina's first book in the Norse series. And that is where I meet Sestra. She is so strong. But has lead the life of a Thrall. I wondered who could be strong enough to be Sestra's match. In comes Brandr, and he is awesome. Total Viking !! I cried at the end. I was so emotional. I would give this series 10 stars if I could. I highly recommend this book !!

Sestra and Brandr

I absolutely loved this story!!
It was HOT!!
Their banter is fun. I love how they bring out each other's better sides. Sestra is a very brave slave and Brandr is a brooding lone wolf. The way they challenge each other and fight for each other is perfect.
I hope there is more to come of the this world as I enjoyed the secondary characters and the revisit of the previous story's H/h.
This was well worth the wait!!

If you're looking for a good adventure book that has it all- high excitement, action, supernatural elements, and slightly steamy romance, along with a frantic search for an ancient treasure, this is the book for you. Check it out. I recommend it to the reading community.

Stunning story of Viking life. Survival was hard but the people were harder. No matter what, they persevered through it all. Brandr and Sestra are part of this world and learn that two make life easier to endure. But first they must overcome obstacles in their way.

Fantastic!

This is a wonderful exciting story about the slave Sestra and her man Brandr. It was so well written and gave insight on how the Vikings lived long ago. I loved it!
