Who Owns Stonehenge?

England owns Stonehenge, a famous stone monument located in Salisbury, England. It was built 4,000-5,000 years ago and was privately owned since the Middle Ages. It was held by the Antrobus family between 1800 and 1915.

Sir Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge in 1915 for 6,600 pounds when the monument was put up for auction after the Antrobus heir was killed. Interestingly, Sir Cecil Chubb had bought the Stonehenge on a whim, as a gift to his wife. When his wife did not like it, he decided to give it to England in 1918 with the conditions that locals be given free access and that a low fee is charged for guests.

Stonehenge is currently administered by English heritage. As of 2010, the estimated value of the Stonehenge is 51 million pounds and anyone may visit the site. Members of the English Heritage Society can tour it for free.
