After only one day on sale, Taylor Swift‘s “Look What You Made Me Do” is off to a sizzling start — and will likely sell a half-million downloads in its first week, according to industry forecasters.
On Friday, the day of the track’s commercial release, the song sold a little less than 200,000 downloads in the U.S., according to initial sales reports to Nielsen Music. To put that figure in perspective, no song has sold that many copies in a single week in six months — since Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” moved 200,000 downloads in the week ending Feb. 16 (in the wake of the song’s performance on the Grammy Awards on Feb. 12).
“Look” should easily debut at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart dated Sept. 16 (reflecting the tracking week ending Aug. 31), garnering the diva her 12th leader on the list. Industry prognosticators suggest the tune could sell a half-million downloads in its first week. If “Look” does sell that many copies, it would earn the biggest sales week for any song since Adele’s “Hello” sold 653,000 downloads in its second week (ending Nov. 5, 2015), following its 1.11 million debut.
“Look” is also anticipated to hit the upper reaches of the Sept. 16-dated Billboard Hot 100 chart, which blends airplay, sales and streaming data, after a likely debut on the Sept. 9 list (from just airplay).
“Look What You Made Me Do” is the first single from Swift’s upcoming new studio album, Reputation, which is due out Nov. 10. Swift’s last album, 1989, was led by the single “Shake It Off,” which bowed with 544,000 downloads sold in its first frame (week ending Aug. 24, 2014).
