900-plus OPS students honored at Awesome Awards ceremony
More than 900 African-American students were given awards during Omaha Public School's Awesome Awards ceremony.The ceremony recognizes seventh- and eighth-graders who maintained a 3.0 or higher grade-point average during the first semester of the school year.Friends, family and faculty members lined the Benson High School gymnasium Sunday afternoon for the ceremony. The ceremony aims to inspire students to get involved in school activities and promote positive school experiences.Michaela Jackson, the assistant principal of Beveridge Magnet Middle School, said about 40 of her students were honored."They're absolutely awesome," she said. "It is an amazing way to recognize our young people and their efforts to succeed."OPS has hosted the ceremony for 21 years.
